Dunkley, Terrelonge claim U-20 100m titles at Carifta Trials

JAVORNE Dunkley of Elite Performance and Thieanna-Lee Terrelonge of Edwin Allen have both expressed their delight after producing impressive performances to capture the Under-20 boys’ and girls’ 100m events, respectively, on the second day of the three-day Carifta Trials at the National Stadium on Saturday.

Dunkley sped to 10.32 seconds to win the event comfortably, ahead of St Jago’s Raheem Pinnock (10.44s) and Khamani Gordon of Calabar who finished third in 10.45s. Dunkley was very slow out of the blocks before recovering at the 60m mark to outsprint his rivals to the finish line and win the event.

“I have been working very hard for this and so I am very happy that I came out on top,” said Dunkley. “I didn’t get a good start but after I came out of my drive phase I was able to execute the race properly and so I have to give God thanks for that.”

Terrelonge, who has been having an outstanding season so far, clocked a very fast 11.25s to win her event ahead of Sabrina Dockery of Lacovia (11.49s), and Shanoya Douglas of Muschett High School (11.58s). Like Dunkley, Terrelonge was also happy with her performance, despite getting off to a poor start.

“It wasn’t the best of starts for me so I had to stay calm and execute — and I was able to do that and get this victory,” she said. “It feels great to win this Under-20 final, knowing that I am only 16 years old., so being the Under-20 champion is spectacular for me.”

Kingston College’s (KC) Nyrone Wade won the Under-17 100m in 10.49s, with second going to Excelsior’s Malike Nugent in 10.52s. • Wolmer’s High School for Girlss’ Natrece East took home the girls’ Under-17 crown in 11.62s, ahead of Hydel’s Poshanna-Lee Blake (11.82s).

KC’s Marcinho Rose produced a lifetime-best 46.36s to win the final of the Under-20 400m event. Javaughn Pinnock of New Herah Track Club was second in a personal-best time of 46.84s, while third went to Zachary Wallace of Maggotty High School in 47.44s. A few minutes earlier, Hydel’s Abigail Campbell sped to a personal-best time of 52.84s to capture the girls’ Under-20 400m race.

It was the first time in her career Campbell was breaking the 52 seconds barrier. Shanque Williams of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) was second in a personal-best effort of 53.09s, and Kelly Ann Carr of Edwin Allen was third in 53.64s.

Calabar’s Nickecoy Bramwell won the boys’ Under-17 400m in 47.65s, ahead of Foga Road’s Paul Henry (48.65s) and Zachary Rowe of Ardenne (49.22s). In the girls’ Under-17 400m event Hydel’s Nastassia Fletcher produced a lifetime-best 54.70s to win the event, ahead of Tresha-Lee Sutherland of Clarendon (55.63s) and Britannia Bailey of Holmwood (55.74s).

In the boys’ Under-20 1500m final, Edwin Allen’s Rickeisha Simms clocked 4:31.33 minutes to win the event ahead of Kaydeen Johnson of Hydel (4:32.56) and Monique Stewart of Edwin Allen (3:38.70). Jamaica College’s (JC) Kemario Bygrave raced to a personal-best time of 4:01.54 to capture the boys’ 1500m event. KC’s Jaquan Coke was second in 4:02.84 while third went to Waval Davis from Foga Road in 4:05.97.

Edwin Allen’s Rasheda Samuels leapt to 1.87m to win the final of the Under-20 high jump, in front of her teammate Deijanea Bruce 1.75m. Daneille Noble was third, also with a mark of 1:75m.

JC’s Kemario Bygrave impressively raced to a time of 1:53.08 minutes, leading all qualifiers for the final of the boys’ Under-20 800m. Additionally, KC’s Jaquan Coke secured a spot in the final with an impressive time of 1:53.35.

Other notable qualifiers include Yoshane Bowen of Maggotty (1:54.10), KC’s Schevorn Wardlow (1:54.44), and Samuel Creary of JC (1:54.66).

In the boys’ Under-17 section, JC’s trio of Cavel Nooks (1:58.25), Shemar Green (1:58.26), and Yohance Carty (1:58.48) lead the qualifiers for today’s final.

Moving on to the female section in the Under-20 category, St Catherine’s Kitania Headley, who has consistently performed well this season, clocked 2:16.23 to lead all qualifiers for the final. Edwin Allen’s pair of Monique Stewart (2:17.52) and Rickeisha Simms (2:19.94) secured their spots as other main qualifiers for the final.

KC’s Merrick Richards, enjoying an excellent season, clocked 51.67s to top all qualifiers for today’s final of the Boys’ Under-20 400m hurdles event. Shamar Blake of Elite Performance, the event favourite, will enter the final with the second-fastest time of 51.74s.

Richards and Blake were the only men to break the 51 seconds barrier in the heats. Other main qualifiers for the final include Trevoy Smith of Herbert Morrison (52.16s), JC’s Princewell Martin (52.33s), and Excelsior’s Daniel Wright (52.35s).

In the Girls’ Under-20 400m hurdles event, Edwin Allen’s Kelly-Ann Carr leads all qualifiers going into today’s final after winning her heat in 58.02s. Strong competition is expected from Hydel’s Aaliyah Mullings, who holds the second-fastest time of 59.72s entering the final. Other contenders for the gold medal include STETHS’s Chennai Jarrett (59.87s), Rhianna Lewis from Rhodes Hall (59.93s), and St Jago’s Quana Walker (1:01.92).
