CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AFP)— Rachin Ravindra underlined his budding “superstar” status with a battling half century to continue New Zealand’s fightback in the second Test against Australia on Sunday.

New Zealand, who lost opener Tom Latham early on day three in Christchurch, were 243-3 at lunch to lead by 149 with seven wickets in hand.

Ravindra was on 67 not out with Daryl Mitchell unbeaten on 42 at the break. Australia have two overs to wait before the next new ball.

Latham, who featured in a century stand with Kane Williamson the previous day to clear the 94-run first innings deficit, could only add eight to his overnight 65 before he was caught behind off Pat Cummins.

The umpire’s original call was not out and the Australians debated the decision for some time before seeking a review which revealed a faint inside edge. Ravindra was undaunted by the loss of his senior partner and, with Mitchell in support, has continued to build New Zealand’s lead.

It is his second half-century in the series after a 59 in the first Test when he was described by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon as a “superstar” in the making.

Ravindra has faced 121 balls for his 67, while Mitchell has been more aggressive with his 42, including a huge six off Lyon, coming from 70 deliveries.

After resuming the day at 134-2, New Zealand have had their most productive run-scoring session of the series, even though there was still movement and bounce for the Australian seamers.
