J Wray & Nephew plays host to female voices in the spirits industry
ON Friday, March 8, a number of female leaders in entrepreneurship gathered at the J Wray & Nephew (JWN) corporate head office on Dominica Drive for the Spirited Women luncheon in honour of 11 phenomenal women who were featured in season 1 of the company’s digital series.
Spirited Women is a groundbreaking series conceptualised by the JWN team in 2023, that shines the spotlight on the remarkable and resilient women who have defied norms, and broken down barriers to success within various segments of the spirits industry. The inclusive series featured leading ladies from community bars, wholesalers, supermarkets, and trend leading accounts, showcasing the diversity of roles women play in the industry.
The series goes beyond the surface, engaging in serious and thought-provoking conversations about the unique challenges faced by women in an industry traditionally characterised by male influence. Spirited Women sought to unearth challenges faced by women in business and provide insights into the personal and professional journeys of these extraordinary women.
Through Spirited Women, the creators aspire to inspire and empower female entrepreneurs and young women aspiring to make their mark in the world of spirits.
“The alcohol beverage industry has been a bastion of male dominance for decades. However, as more women ascend to leadership roles within the sector, the call for women’s empowerment and representation continues to grow louder,” said Tanikie McClarthy Allen, senior director, public affairs and sustainability at J Wray & Nephew.
“Our very own Joy Spence, the world’s first female master blender, stands as an inspiring figure who has shattered barriers and served as a beacon of motivation for women across the industry. Joy not only holds the title of a trailblazer but also serves as a nurturing figure, a mentor, and a mother to many within the industry. Her commitment to pouring into individuals with talent, particularly young women, has created a ripple effect of empowerment and encouragement. With Joy’s influence and the world in mind, along with a collaboration between the CCM and Commercial Departments, we birthed the idea of Spirited Women.”
