Last Headley Cup semi-final spot up for grabs

Group Two teams Manchester High and Tacky High are to meet at the former’s sports complex in Mandeville in a two-day match starting Tuesday, March 26 to decide the fourth semi-finalist in the ISSA/Grace Headley Cup cricket competition which embraces rural schools.

Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), last year’s beaten finalists May Day High and Clarendon College are already through to the semi-final round.

The Manchester versus Tacky game was originally scheduled for this week. The winner will face STETHS.

ISSA sources say the semi-final between May Day High and Clarendon College has been postponed from Tuesday/Wednesday to facilitate the playing of both semi-final games on the same day. Also, a postponement will allow replay of a rained-out T20 fixture involving May Day High and Black River High.

May Day High advanced after beating a combative Tacky High on Tuesday in their Group Two clash.

In Group One, STETHS and Clarendon College advanced after beating Garvey Maceo High and Dinthill Technical High the previous week.

At May Day High on March 18 and 19, the home team, driven by an outstanding all-round performance from West Indies Under-19 representative Reon Edwards and a century from Chadwick Hewitt, defeated Tacky High by 90 runs.

May Day made 357 all out, with Hewitt (112) Edwards (96) and Javed Williams (72) leading the scoring against Tacky High’s Jevone Wynter who took four for 74.

Trevaun Williams followed up his triple century last week with 105 as Tacky High reached 267 all out. Other substantial scores for Tacky High came from Jiovanni Richardson (45) and Jevone Wynter (36).

Bowling for May Day, Edwards took seven for 120 with his left-arm pace while fellow national age-group pacer Nashane Meade – who is returning from injury – took two for 22.

At Dinthill Technical High on March 18 and 19, the home team beat Garvey Maceo High by eight runs.

Dinthill Technical made 206 all out. Ojay Whittingham (84) and Jemone James (72) led the scoring against Shawnjay Clarke, four for three, and Dontay Dillon, three for 68.

Garvey Maceo, led by Connell Jackson’s 61, replied with 198 all out. Jones took seven for 43 to complete an outstanding all-round performance.

At Garvey Maceo High on March 15, STETHS beat Garvey Maceo High by four wickets.

STETHS captain Tyriek Bryan twirled his leg breaks to take five for 28 as Garvey Maceo were dismissed for 124 with Tagel Campbell’s 21 being the top score.

The defending champions crossed the line at 125 for six, Kevoni Graham leading the way with 21.

At Dinthill Technical on March 15, Clarendon College overcame their hosts by 230 runs.

Clarendon College first made 336 for nine wickets declared. Kenardo Cameron followed up last week’s century against STETHS with 98, while Tequan Roberts made 81.

For Dinthill Technical, Jemone James took four for 54.

Dinthill were skittled for 105. Jones top scored with 34 against seamers Roberts (4-32) and Cameron (2-6).

At Munro College on March 15, May Day High cruised to a nine-wicket win over their hosts.

Munro were dismissed for 54 with off-spinners Chris Lewis (five for 22) and Chadwick Hewitt (four for 31) being the destroyers. May Day achieved victory at 59 for 1 with Lewis scoring 31 not out.

AT STETHS Sports Complex on March 22, the hosts beat Cornwall College by 10 wickets.

STETHS captain Bryan captured seven wickets for eight runs with his leg breaks as Cornwall fell for 65 all out with Henzel Evans top scoring with 32. STETHS achieved victory at 67 for no loss, with openers Sharie Jaddo and Kevaun Brown unbeaten on 34 and 30, respectively.
