Stop A Gap Foundation rises to the occasion at Top Mountain, St Catherine
Florida-based Jamaican American Dr Cheryl Morgan wanted to give back to her beloved Top Mountain, a little-known district in St Catherine where she was born and raised, and so was born the Stop A Gap Foundation.
A team from the foundation led by Dr Morgan was recently the toast of Top Mountain as she, her US army veteran husband Jeffrey, and local supporters handed out clothes, shoes, school supplies and groceries to over 100 community residents, including shut-ins and their caregivers.
Through Jeffrey Morgan, other US army veterans have been supporting the non-profit organisation, notably William Morgan Jr and Jamie McPherson who donated clothing and other supplies.
“There can be only a few things which give more satisfaction than reaching out to assist your fellowmen in need,” said Dr Morgan as she received the gratitude of the many who turned out for the presentation. “I encourage others to join us in making a positive impact in the world.”
She praised the outstanding work contributed by Beverley Armstrong, also a daughter of Top Mountain and secretary of the foundation. Armstrong has been able to draw on her experience as a former president and current treasurer of the North Lauderdale Kiwanis club in Florida.
During her presidency she led the club in serving over 1,000 children and families through various projects, including a literacy programme and food drives. Her experience gained in over 2,000 charity hours was vital in organising the Top Mountain event and mentoring the local assistants to execute the project, Dr Morgan said.
“We are also grateful for the hands-on support of our local members, Ganea Donegal, Romalia Pitt and Angela Johnson, as well as generous businessman Errol Lee Bryan who played a very integral part in making this possible by providing the facilities and other resources to make this a success”.
