SMA making significant strides
JAMAICA’S regulator for the radio frequency spectrum, the Spectrum Management Authority (SMA), is reporting significant advancements in its operations in recent time.
According to managing director of the SMA Maria Myers-Hamilton, it is now marking a transformative period of achievement and progress spearheaded by the vision of enhancing efficiency and accessibility.
Myers-Hamilton told the Jamaica Observer that the SMA has successfully implemented several key initiatives, including the acquisition of a state-of-the-art e-licensing system.
“The launch of our new e-licensing system marks a significant milestone in our journey towards providing efficient and customer-oriented services. Since its implementation, we have witnessed remarkable improvements in our operations and efficiency. This initiative underscores our commitment to leveraging technology to meet the evolving needs of Jamaica’s telecommunications landscape,” said Myers-Hamilton.
She pointed out that recognising the need to modernise its licensing management system, the SMA acquired the e-licensing system in the 2020/2021 financial year to better serve internal and external stakeholders.
“With this acquisition, the authority aims to streamline the process of creating, modifying, and renewing licences, eliminating heavy manual intervention and improving timeliness. Supported by several regulatory bodies and committees, such as the Programme Portfolio Management Committee of eGov Jamaica Limited, the implementation of this system promises enhanced accessibility and customer satisfaction, significantly transforming how stakeholders interact with the SMA,” added Myers-Hamilton.
She said in addition to the e-licensing system, the SMA has made substantial progress in promoting renewable energy solutions and achieving ISO 9001:2015 Certification.
“The installation of renewable energy systems at monitoring sites and office buildings aligns with the Government of Jamaica’s National Energy Policy, contributing to energy efficiency and diversification efforts. Furthermore, the SMA’s dedication to quality management is evident through its pursuit of ISO 9001:2015 Certification, a testament to its commitment to operational excellence and continuous improvement.
“As the SMA continues to innovate and adapt to the dynamic telecommunications sector, it remains steadfast in its mission to drive technological advancement, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder satisfaction,” declared Myers-Hamilton.
The SMA also serves an advisory body to the Minister of Science, Energy and Technology Daryl Vaz and regulates the spectrum under the Telecommunications Act.
