DJ Kevy excited about opportunities in soca music
The just-concluded soca season has been a good one for in-demand soca disc jock, DJ Kevy.
The university student played at several events, among them Touchdown Jamaica, Final Fete at the University of Technology (UTech), GenXS J’Ouvert, GenXS Road March and XS Sunset, as well as at Carnival Glam Hub.
“The experience was a good one for me. I had fun entertaining the patrons to the max, ensuring they had a great time and also realising that progress is being made where my career is concerned,” said DJ Kevy.
With the various Carnival-themed events being held locally, and a recent successful staging of Carnival Road March in the streets of Kingston, DJ Kevy says Carnival continues to make serious inroads.
“Carnival has definitely grown in Jamaica and the growth is forecast to continue for years to come. I believe Jamaicans are now attempting to become more accepting of the Carnival culture and the excitement that lies within its rituals,” said DJ Kevy.
He cited the explosion of songs such as Bunji Garlin’s Carnival Contract, DNA by Mical Teja, In the Centre by GBM Nutron and Farmer Nappy, Search Party by Preedy, and Holiday by Problem Child as favourites among soca enthusiasts this season.
DJ Kevy began playing music at an early age.
“Music, for me, began as young as my primary school days in the household. My older brother played different genres of music, so I was inspired from an early age. However, my DJ aspect began after fooling around with virtual DJ. I got more into it, and I learnt the art of mixing,” said DJ Kevy.
He added: “I was in the fifth form at Wolmer’s [Boys’ School] when I realised that I was gaining all the skills of being a DJ and I had all of this knowledge, and people were approaching me to play at their events. So, it was then I said, ‘You know what, let’s make this a career,’ ” DJ Kevy explained.
