Sonny T ‘chips’ away to victory around two turns
Following Sonny T And Chippy’s triumph in the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association of Jamaica (TOBA) Trophy on Saturday, April 13, 2024, trainer Spencer Chung hopes that his charge will continue to progress and achieve success.
Sonny T And Chippy by Savoy Stomp out of Trinket Box, ridden by Raddesh Roman, came from behind runners to win the Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward travelling nine furlongs and 25 yards by a length and three quarters.
Sonny T And Chippy was particularly vigilant at the start of the race, pursuing Bridal Blush (Roderick DaCosta) around the clubhouse bend.
Sonny T And Chippy let Storm (Josue Osorio) go by entering the main track, settling in third place down the backstretch.
Sonny T And Chippy, a five-year-old bay colt, kept up a good pace until the half-mile turn when he slipped down in second place behind Bridal Blush.
With momentum on his side, Sonny T And Chippy struck the front full of running at the top of the lane and cruised to victory at the finish line.
Sunset Silhoutte (Abigail Able) occupied the second slot with All For Love (Omar Walker) getting up for third. The final time for the race was 2:00.0 (26.4 x 51.1 x 1:16.2 x 1:44.3).
“
Sonny T and Chippy has always been there in his races. He is a good stayer and so he just needed a good ride and everything was always going to be alright,” Chung told the
Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“It was an excellent performance; I mean a winning performance is always good. He had some issues and the vet worked on him and now I hope he will improve and continue with his success,” Chung added.
