Gold Seal Flour Sweet Art Bake Expo delights

The Gold Seal Flour Sweet Art Bake Expo held last Sunday at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel was a resounding success as baking enthusiasts from across the island turned out to celebrate the art of confectionery.

The eighth staging of the event featured an impressive array of pastries, cakes, and desserts crafted by Jamaica’s most talented bakers and pastry chefs.

The expo started at 10:00am with an opening ceremony and a warm welcome from the Master of Ceremonies, Andrea Wilson-Green, in the Ball Room. This was followed by the announcement of vendors, patrons, and sponsors who played a crucial role in bringing the event to life. Throughout the morning, attendees enjoyed a walkthrough and interviews with various vendors, gaining insight into their specialities and offerings.

Title Sponsor Gold Seal Flour, along with Seprod’s supporting brands such as Chiffon Margarine, Serge Island Dairy Milk, Eve Canned Foods, and Betty Condensed Milk, played an instrumental role in the execution of the event.

Marissa Hayman, Brand Manager of Serge, explaining the synergy between the brand and the Sweet Art Bake Expo, said: “Seprod is a household name. We have everything you need to bake—flour, sugar, spices, even browning. So it was almost inevitable for us to partner with this event.”

Marielle Wade, Brand Manager of Gold Seal Flour, echoed sentiments about the innate connection between the event and the brand.

“As title sponsor, naturally, we were pivotal in offsetting the costs of executing this event. The lovely exhibitors have all received packages from the Seprod group, including Gold Seal Flour, which is instrumental in recipes for cake preparation,” said Wade.

Event organiser Andrea Wilson-Green also shared how proud she was that the expo has been able to elevate itself each year.

“When we launched, we realised how many bakers there are, and the level of creativity… how it has grown. We have seen new bakers emerge, and for existing bakers, their businesses have grown,” said Wilson-Green.

She added, “The Sweet Art Bake Expo has become a platform for bakers to showcase their talent, connect, and grow their businesses. It’s been amazing to see the impact it’s had on the baking community in Jamaica.”

The Kid’s Corner conducted a cupcake decorating session during the event, providing a fun and interactive activity for young attendees. Concurrently, judging the Pre-decorated Cake competition commenced, highlighting the creativity and skill of local bakers. A demonstration by Frozen Delights Jamaica captivated the audience, followed by more interviews with vendors and a live cake decorating session with a patron giveaway.

Camille Moore, Chiffon Margarine Brand Manager, also explained that the brand aimed to showcase how their products are a staple in Jamaican baking and cooking. She noted that the exhibitors have benefited from accessing products, including a baker’s bundle, and from the increased visibility and networking opportunities that the event provided.

As the afternoon progressed, another cupcake decorating session for kids and a demonstration by Seprod kept the energy high and the audience engaged.

The announcement of the Predecorated Cake competition winners was a much-anticipated moment, celebrated enthusiastically. Cakes by Queata stood out among the winners by winning both the Sculpting category and the Judges Pick award. At the same time, Suga Mama Cakes secured the top spot in the Cartoon category and received the People’s Choice award. This was followed by the Best Tasting Cake winner announcement and the Creative Maestro Face-off announcement, which added to the excitement.

In the Creative Maestro Face-off, Damaine Beckford of Cakes by Damaine took first place, with Jermaine Smith of JSmith Cakes and Okeim Dallas of CakesYouLikeJa coming in second and third, respectively. Winners received gift baskets with an array of sponsored products and cash prizes.

Seprod’s Group Marketing Manager, Dr Debbian Spence-Minott, shared that the event allows the brands to bring together the baking community.

“This was a no-brainer for us. Why not put all our products together, connect with this community as well, and show them that we are here to support them as well?”

She added that their contributions included products, discounted prices, cash support, and a WhatsApp group that keeps in touch with Jamaican bakers.

The highlight of the evening was the Cake Decorating Challenge. This thrilling competition showcased the participants’ incredible talent and creativity. The challenge concluded with the winner’s announcement, drawing cheers from the crowd.

The Gold Seal Flour Sweet Art Bake Expo provided a perfect blend of entertainment and education, making it a must-attend event for anyone passionate about baking. The expo underscored Jamaica’s growing appreciation for baking and fostered a strong sense of community among baking professionals and hobbyists.
