Reggae Boyz 2014 World Cup journey chronicled in new documentary
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The German Embassy on Waterloo Road drew football fans from across the island on Wednesday night for the première of the documentary, Reggae Boyz. The film chronicles the journey of the 2014 men’s national football team as they attempted to recreate history in the World Cup qualifiers.
The team at the time featured the likes of Jermaine ‘Tuffy’ Anderson and was spearheaded by 1998 World Cup hero-turned-coach Theodore Whitmore followed by German coach, Winfried Schäfer. According to the film’s director, Till Schauder, the documentary is about “Jamaican resilience.”
“It follows the path of the 2013 national soccer team trying to make it to the World Cup which everybody knows they didn’t make the World Cup but they made it in other ways. They inspired the country regardless and so this film merges soccer, music, Jamaican talent, Jamaican vibrancy, creativity to tell a story of resilience and I hope that’s gonna inspire people,” he said.
The documentary sees musician and actor, Sheldon Shepherd taking on a lead role and will also feature ‘Tuffy’ Anderson himself. The premiere was attended by producers and directors of the film as well as the German ambassador to Jamaica, Jan Hendrick Van Thiel.
