New trucks to boost St Thomas clean-up
MORANT BAY, St Thomas — Metropolitan Parks and Markets (MPM) Waste Management Limited on Thursday gave the St Thomas Municipal Corporation an update of the measures being taken to keep the parish clean.
According to the agency’s Acting Regional Operations Manager Nigel Gooden, two new trucks have been acquired and will be put into operation soon.
“The dealer has them and they are branding them and all of that; so when the process is complete they will be handed over and we will get the new trucks,” Gooden told councillors.
He said the trucks will be stationed in the parish and will not be travelling back and forth into Kingston like before.
In addition, the parish will be getting a crane truck that will be responsible for removing from the streets derelict vehicles that have been there for years.
A notice sticker will be placed on those vehicles and if the vehicles are still on the roads after a third sticker is placed, they will be removed by the crane.
Gooden said that his team has started the process by visiting communities and identifying vehicles that need to be removed. He implored the councillors who are aware of any derelict vehicles in the streets to reach out to MPM in order to have the notices served.
“It has been our mandate to remove these vehicles for some time now, but we had no crane trucks, so I am happy that we can start this process soon,” Gooden said.
Councillor Michael M cLeod (Jamaica Labour Party, Bath Division) pointed out some communities that need to be targeted once this initiative is launched.
“I have been in communities and sometimes you can hardly find space to drive because of these junk cars. I also know of street garages that need to be cleaned,” McLeod said as he urged MPM to go to the communities and start serving the notices.
Gooden also said that tipper trucks will be available in the parish to aid in the removal of plastics.
Additionally, he said that last month the agency removed two loads of bulky waste, including items such as old refrigerators and stoves.
