Man accused of threatening to kill aunt after chopping her fence and sewer pipe
A St James man accused of damaging his aunt’s fence and sewer pipe, as well as issuing death threats against her, was granted bail in the amount of $200,000 when he appeared in the parish court last Wednesday.
The defendant, Ovan Lewis, was brought before the court displaying multiple facial lacerations. During the court proceedings it came to light that the wounds he sustained were a direct result of a brutal physical assault he endured at the hands of fellow inmates while in custody.
He pleaded not guilty to malicious destruction of property and making threats to commit murder before presiding Judge Kaysha Grant-Pryce.
According to information outlined in court documents the incident occurred on June 1 about 5:20 am in Lilliput, St James.
It is alleged that the complainant, who is the aunt of the defendant, was inside her house when she witnessed him chopping her fence post and sewer pipe.
The complainant brought the issue to the attention of the authorities, leading to the arrest of the accused man. Under caution Lewis reportedly said to the police, “Any time mi come out a kill mi a go kill dem…God not sleeping.”
During Wednesday’s court proceedings Judge Grant-Pryce granted Lewis bail in the sum of $200,000 on the condition that he provides up to two sureties following an application by his attorney, Dalton Reid.
Lewis is scheduled to return to court on July 31 for the trial of the case.
