Sts Peter and Paul claim first JISA Prep Champs title

STS Peter and Paul captured their JISA Prep School Championships at the National Stadium on Saturday.

Sts Peter and Paul, who entered the final day trailing former champions Vaz by three points, tallied 211 points to win the championships comfortably. Vaz finished second with 158 points, followed by Our Lady of the Angels with 136, St Andrew with 134.5, and Hydel with 131.5, rounding out the top five schools.

They were followed by Mona with 117, Emmanuel Christian Academy with 101.5, Lannaman’s with 79, Stella Maris with 60, Mount St Joseph with 59, Belair with 44, Wolmer’s with 41, Immaculate with 36, Morris Knibb with 29.5, Richmond Park with 27, Portmore Missionary with 25, and Ardenne with 23.

“We are elated, we are overjoyed, because this for us is a big thing and we don’t take it lightly,” Sts Peter and Paul Principal Claudia Nugent said. “The children have put in the work with their coaches, we have the parents behind us, and we are just happy for this victory — especially with the fact that it is our first-ever Prep Champs title in history.”

Sts Peter and Paul closed out the championships in style with emphatic victories in the Class One Boys’ and Girls’ 4x200m relays, respectively, in the final events of the meet. Sts Peter and Paul’s Donovan James clinched the 200m and 400m double on Saturday’s final day of competition. James first won the 400m with a respectable time of 56.73 seconds. Hydel’s Imaney Samuels finished second with a personal best of 57.82 seconds, while third place went to Vaz’s Rafael Burke who clocked 1:00.80 minutes.

An hour and a half later, James returned to win the 200m event with a personal best time of 25.86 seconds. Imaney Samuels from Hydel settled for second place in 26.53 seconds, and third place went to Kaden Levermore in 26.92 seconds. A few minutes later, James’ teammate Anya Johnson won the girls’ Class One 300m event with a personal best time of 43.57 seconds, ahead of Hydel’s Franchesa Herron who finished in 44.28 seconds, and Catteleya Gayle from Alvernia who clocked 45.40 seconds.

Richmond Park’s Alzeliha Allen won the girls’ Class One sprint double title, securing victory in the 200m event with a new personal best time of 27.38 seconds.

Anya Johnson from Sts Peter and Paul finished second in 27.63 seconds while St Andrew’s Gabrielle Williamson placed third in 27.98 seconds. Allen also claimed the Class One 100m title on Friday, during the second day of competition.

In the field events, Najaa Rattray from Mona captured the girls’ Class One long jump competition with a mark of 4.48m, surpassing her teammate Ziva McConnell’s 4.21m, and Jada-Paige Chung of Vaz who achieved 4.19m. Nathan Snipe from Portmore Missionary won the gold in the boys’ Class Two long jump with a leap of 4.16m.

Kayden Lennon from Vaz was second with a mark of 4.13m, while third went to Jon-Andre Brown of Our Lady of Angels who jumped 4.13m.
