General Accident Insurance Company held its 4th annual Blood Drive on Wednesday, June 12, in collaboration with Chain of Hope Jamaica and the National Blood Transfusion Service supported by the Musson Foundation. The event saw a good turnout and collected a total of 47 pints of blood, providing a significant boost to the nation’s blood reserves.

The Blood Drive, which took place at the company’s head-office, aimed to address the urgent need for blood donations in Jamaica. Each pint of blood collected has the potential to save up to three lives, highlighting the critical importance of this initiative.

“As the leading general insurance company in Jamaica, General Accident has always been committed to the well-being and safety of our community,” said Lesley Miller, Chief Information Officer of General Accident. “This blood drive underscores our dedication to saving lives and supporting healthcare initiatives.”

Chain of Hope Jamaica, a charity dedicated to providing life-saving heart surgeries for children, played a pivotal role in raising awareness for the event.

“Very often when the Bustamante Children’s Hospital and the Cardiac Centre clinicians approach the blood bank for blood, either there is not enough, or the blood type needed is not available. So, it’s important for us to have blood drives like this,” said the General Manager, Nola Phillpotts-Brown. “This blood drive is critical as it provides this precious and much needed commodity to replenish the supplies of the blood bank so that surgical and other procedures can be carried out without delay.”

The National Blood Transfusion Service, responsible for collecting, testing, and distributing blood, expressed gratitude for the collective effort. Dr Keishawna Pinnock, Blood Donor Organiser for the National Blood Transfusion Service oversaw the success of the event.

Deputy Chairman of the Musson Foundation, Melanie Subratie, expressed her gratitude for the efforts of both the partners and the donors “We are definitely proud of this tradition that we have established together and proud of the life-saving impact that it has had,” Subratie stated. “At the Musson Foundation, we believe in fostering a spirit of community and compassion, and this blood drive aligns with our values including improving the health and well-being of our fellow Jamaicans.”

General Accident expressed its gratitude to the participants, volunteers, and partners who it said helped make its blood drive a “huge success”, adding that it remains committed to supporting the health and well-being of the Jamaican community and looks forward to continuing the tradition in years to come.
