International jockeys to make local debut at Jamaica Derby

Edgard Zayas, Angel Cruz, Jeiron Barbosa to add flair to prestigious event, while announcer Peter Aiello returns

The stage is set for an exciting Jamaica Derby race day on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 with the highly anticipated local debut of three international jockeys: Edgard Zayas, Angel Cruz, and Jeiron Barbosa.

Additionally, renowned Gulfstream announcer Peter Aiello will return to add his expertise to the event.

This announcement was made by Christopher Wills, vice-president of operations at Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL), during a press conference held at Caymanas on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

According to US website Equibase, Zayas has a career record of 2,355 wins, 2,104 seconds, 1,744 thirds from $13,280 mounts with lifetime earnings of $72,500,769.

Cruz has career stats of 983 wins, 982 seconds, and 906 thirds from 6,806 mounts with lifetime earnings of $34,666,587.

Barbosa has a career record of 415 wins, 391 seconds, and 375 thirds from 2,415 mounts with lifetime earnings of $14,666,093.

Meanwhile, Aiello will be making his third appearance at the Park.

“I am excited to share that we will have some very special guests joining us on Jamaica Derby race day,” Wills said.

“The Caymanas Park family is no stranger to the awesome work of the acclaim announcer Pete Aiello from Gulfstream Park, and we are happy to have him back on Derby Day to accompany our great Brian Rickman.

“Not only will Pete be joining us, but we will also be having international jockeys on the card to have their flair and expertise on the day. We welcome jockeys Edgard Zayes, multiple graded stakes winning jockey from South Florida; Jeiron Barbosa, multiple graded stakes placed jockey from Laurel Park; and Angel Cruz, multiple graded stakes winning jockey from Laurel Park,” Wills added.

Zayas has secured five rides on the 11-race card programme including Captain Sparrow for trainer Anthony Nunes in the 104th running of the Jamaica Derby. His others rides are Colorado Ranger for trainer Borris McIntosh; Flybluejet for trainer Philip Feanny; Undisclosdlocation for Nunes; and Atlantic Blue for trainer Patrick Lynch.

Both Cruz and Jarbosa have secured three rides each. Cruz will ride aboard California Gold for Lynch; Immeasurable Joy for Nunes; and All for Love for trainer Gary Subratie.

Jarbosa will partner Box Box for trainer Owen Sharpe, First Grandson for Lynch, and
Sisten Treasure for Subratie.

Aiello made his debut commentating races at Caymanas Park on Saturday, November 11, 2023. During the 10 races on offer that day, Aiello, who has established himself as one of the world’s finest race callers, brought a high degree of accuracy, excitement, and clever phrases to his calls. Aiello’s second appearance was on Easter Monday, April 1, 2024.

Aiello two classic catch phrases are “Easyyyyy money” and “Who do you like from here?”
