Crystal Plummer’s netball future shines bright

Crystal Plummer’s netball career has been fuelled by a passion that seems to shine as bright as the Caribbean sun.

Plummer’s journey from her early days on the island’s gleaming courts to her current status as one of Jamaica’s emerging star players is a fitting example of the unstoppable power of devotion, perseverance, and unwavering passion.

Her career has been marked by thrilling wins, humbling disappointments, and essential lessons.

“In all honesty, my primary school coach/teacher Mr Howard Daley told me I should come to the training because of how I perform in physical education class,” Plummer, who plays centre and wing defence, recalled, her eyes sparkling with gratitude.

“That was when I was in, like, fourth grade in 2012. I was just a shy and introverted kid, but netball helped me to come out of my shell,” the 21-year-old told the Jamaica Observer.

With each passing year, Plummer’s talent grew. The former Holmwood Technical student said she practised tirelessly, honing her skills and perfecting her technique. Her hard work paid off when she was selected to represent Jamaica at the Jean Pierre tournament in St Lucia in 2018. The team emerged victorious, and Plummer’s star grew.

“The first time I represented Jamaica was at the Under-16 level when we went to St Lucia at the Jean Pierre tournament and we won,” she beamed, her voice filled with pride.

“When I made the senior team to go to England for a Test series, which was my first time playing in an international competition. It was a dream come true,” she added.

But Plummer’s journey was not without its challenges as balancing training with college life pushed her to the limit. There were times when she felt exhausted, both physically and mentally. Yet, she persevered, driven by her love for the sport and her determination to succeed.

“Honestly, I don’t know, but I make it work… it was very tough, I was tired until I couldn’t even sleep at night. When I started GC Foster College for Physical Education and Sports, that’s when I made the senior squad and I was training for the national team, for intercollegiate competition and I have school game, trust me it was very tough,” Plummer said.

“But when it was time for schoolwork and training, nobody would know I was tired because I put my best foot forward all the time. I had to learn to manage my time effectively and prioritise my tasks. I wanted something from the sport and so I made the sacrifice to get everything done,” she admitted.

As Plummer’s career soared, she drew inspiration from her coaches and mentors. They taught her valuable lessons about focus, discipline, and resilience. She learned to stay focused after mistakes and to let go of setbacks. These lessons became the foundation of her success.

The highlight of Plummer’s career came when she won bronze with the senior Sunshine Girls at the Netball World Cup in South Africa last year. This moment was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

“Getting bronze at the Netball World Cup in South Africa, that’s the best one yet,” she exclaimed. “It’s special to me because it’s the biggest stage in netball, and I had a really great tournament. We worked so hard as a team, and it paid off.”

Today, Plummer is a netball superstar, inspiring countless young netballers to chase their dreams. Plummer continues to soar, driven by her love for the game and her desire to reach new heights.

“The love I have for the sport, that’s what keeps me going,” she said, smiling. “My goal is to make it to Australia or England to play in their league, just to do what I love. I want to inspire others to chase their dreams, just like I did.”
