Antarctica stuns with dominant victory in Caymanas Park 65th Anniversary Trophy
In a dramatic reversal of fortune, four-year-old bay colt Antarctica, trained by Errol Waugh and ridden by Shane Richardson, led the pack from start to finish, claiming the $1.19-million Caymanas Park 65th Anniversary Trophy on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
Competing in a challenging Restricted Stakes contest for imported three-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) and native-bred three-year-olds and four-years (non-winners of four) over 7 furlongs (1,400m), Antarctica showcased his remarkable resurgence, leaving the competition in his wake.
With a blistering pace, Antarctica crossed the finish line a staggering 5 ¾ lengths ahead of the field, stopping the clock at an impressive 1:28.1 (24.2 x 48.0 x 1:14.1).
This resounding victory marked a triumphant return to form for the talented colt, sired by
Savoy Stomp out of Jesse’s Favorite.
Exploding out of the number one barrier, Antarctica, the Connecticut-owned bay colt, seized the initiative, taking the lead and never relinquishing it. With the blistering start
Antarctica led the field ahead of O So Smart (Paul Francis), Allegiance (Reyan Lewis), and Princess Amahle (Jemar Jackson) as they charged down the backstretch.
As the six-horse field navigated the half-mile (800m) turn, Antarctica’s jockey, Richardson, upped the ante, increasing the tempo and stretching his lead. With no challengers in sight, Antarctica accelerated, pouring on the power and racing away from the field.
In a convincing display of speed and dominance, Antarctica crossed the finish line ahead of Allegiance and O So Smart.
