Teams look to clinch d’Cup play-off spots

Six schools, led by former champions Glenmuir High, could secure zone play-off spots when the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) daCosta Cup competition continues on Tuesday with 26 games, weather permitting.

Glenmuir High and Kemps Hill High from Zone I; Holmwood Technical and Christiana High from Zone G; Port Antonio High from Zone M; and Central High from Zone H can all book spots in the play-offs.

This season’s rules dictate that the five zones with more than six teams are entered into a play-off among the top four on points after they have played each other once.

The top four teams will play three more games, while the others will exit the competition.

High-riding Glenmuir High will have a score to settle when they travel to face Old Harbour High, who beat them at home last season. That loss was their only one of the first round.

Glenmuir have scored 39 goals, by far the most by any team, but they will face a confident Old Harbour High who are coming off a morale-boosting, come-from-behind 3-2 win over Garvey Maceo High on Saturday.

Second-place Kemps Hill can take their place in the play-offs as well, but will have to beat Garvey Maceo, who are also in contention for a play-off spot. Garvey Maceo will be smarting from their defeat on Saturday after they had led 2-0.

Holmwood Technical are enjoying one of their best runs in recent seasons, winning their first five games. They need only a point at home to Troy High to reach the play-offs.

Christiana High can also move forward with a win against Knox College, who would be out of contention with a loss.

Zone M leaders Port Antonio High, seeking a fifth-straight win, can book a play-off spot with a draw against Iona High, who have lost all four games while conceding 30 goals in the process.

Central High, who on Saturday recorded a maiden daCosta Cup win over defending champions Clarendon College, can wrap up a place with a win. But other results need to go in their favour.

William Knibb Memorial High and Spot Valley High, both on 12 points after four-straight wins, will meet in a top-of-the-table Zone D clash in Martha Brae.

Belair High and Ocho Rios High are also going after a fifth-straight win, while Manning’s School and Cornwall College are on a quest for four in a row.
