Pt Antonio, Holmwood and Christiana book d’Cup play-off spots

PORT Antonio High led a trio of teams into their respective zone play-offs in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition on Tuesday with a resounding 20-0 drubbing of Iona High in their Zone M, first-round game played at Carder Park.

Kerone George and Dwayne Rodgers both scored hat-tricks to lead Port Antonio High to their fifth-straight victory and to 15 points, ensuring they will finish in the top four in the zone after the first round of games and qualify for the play-offs.

Holmwood Technical are also through in Zone G after whipping Troy High 11-0 in Zone G — their sixth-straight victory — and are joined by second-placed Christiana High who edged Knox College 2-1 in their game.

Three other schools can qualify for their play-offs today — Central High, Glenmuir High and Titchfield High — when the competition continues with 16 games, including some that were originally scheduled for Tuesday but which were pushed back a day because of waterlogged fields in the aftermath of heavy rains over the weekend and into the early part of the week.

Today, Zone B leaders Anchovy High will be seeking a school record fifth-straight win when they take on former champions Frome Technical who are three points behind after winning their first three games.

It will be the first meeting between the two teams in the first round since 2011, when Frome Technical won 5-1 and 3-0, and statistically there is very little to separate the teams so far this season.

Anchovy High have scored nine goals and conceded two after their 3-1 win over Green Island on Saturday, while Frome Technical have also scored nine goals and conceded three, from three games.

Yesterday, under wet conditions, Port Antonio High showed no mercy as they ran over Iona High who have now conceded 50 goals in five games.

George scored in the fourth, 40th and 63rd minutes; Dwayne Rodgers found the target in the 17th, 41st and 61st minutes, while Javade Lecky and Donjae Wright, Garth White and Johnalpha Lewis all scored braces.

Ocho Rios High were also on a rampage as they beat Ferncourt High 10-1, their fifthstraight win in Zone K, to open up a nine-point lead over the rest of the zone.

Spot Valley High took over the lead in Zone D after beating William Knibb Memorial 1-0 in their top-of-the-zone clash in Martha Brae.

Malike Stewart’s 50th-minute free kick from bout 35 yards out beat goalkeeper Marques Forrester as they improved their perfect record to five wins, while ending William Knibb’s run at four wins.

Carlando Morris scored his first daCosta Cup hat-trick to lead Cornwall College to a 5-1 hammering of Green Pond High, their fourth-straight win, as Nikane Brown got his first goal and Dante Escoffrey got his second.

Manning’s School also won their fourth-straight game, beating Grange Hill High 5-0 in Savanna-la-Mar; Jarvis Meylor scored a double; while Jodon Grey, Kajaye Williams and Rajon McKenzie all scored one goal each.
