Busha Mark encourages youth to ‘Know Your Worth’

Reggae artiste Busha Mark is driving home the message of self-worth with his latest single, ‘Know Your Worth’, a passionate appeal for youngsters not to trade in morals for material possessions.

“The youths need to know that you need to respect your soul, don’t sell out your morals, your values, just to gain material possessions,” Busha Mark, whose real name is Lee Jay Scott, said.

The song is enjoying rotation on stations such as IRIE, HITZ, SunCity radio, Hot 102 FM and Kriss FM, and has been popping up on mixtapes all over the Central American region, especially Panama.

Busha Mark is encouraged that young women, in particular, appear to be responding to the message.

“I am trying to elevate the minds of the male youth with a message that reminds them to know their worth, and that they are free to choose their own paths. But I am also appealing to the ladies – who are the backbone of our society – especially, for them to know their worth, and the feedback from the women in particular has been very positive and inspiring. All the ladies need to do is to believe in themselves,” Busha said.

Born Lee Jay Scott to parents Olive Robinson and Desmond Scott, he grew up in the tough streets of Chisholm Avenue in Kingston 13, Jamaica. Raised in a house filled with music, he began developing his own musical style as a young boy while attending Maxfield Park Primary.

Influenced by his father, he forged a distinctive songwriting and vocal style, and continued to pursue music while he was a student at Norman Manley High. He infused his music with deep spirituality and adopted the stage name, Busha Mark.

“My pet name is Mark, but there were too many ‘Marks’ in the community, so in order to identify us differently, they added my dad’s name Busha,” he explained.

He recorded his first single, ‘Gi Wi Di Gal Dem’ and has continued to hone his craft since then, drawing on musical influences such as Ken Boothe, Gyptian and Anthony Que, to name a few.

By fusing different styles, Busha Mark is working towards achieving his ultimate goal: uniting the world through music. He is compiling tracks for a reggae-infused EP in which he explores social and political topics that are personal to him.

“I am working on my EP as we speak, and quite a few of the tracks are already done. I have a few shows coming up here in Jamaica, none for the Caribbean yet, but the work continues,” he said.

Busha Mark is best known for the song, ‘Walk Di Walk’ which is an anthem in his hometown community of Chisholm Avenue and has racked up over 4,000 likes on his Tik Tok page.

He shot a video for the song, which was directed by DP Akin Films and Wayne South of Caution Films.
