WWW…WallpapersThe When, Where and Why

Wallpaper is an age-old decorative element that many a client, in years past, swiftly rejected on my suggestion, but I am so pleased to find myself up and down the ladder installing wallpapers, now that it is evident that they have made a stylish comeback in modern interiors. And the rage is not just my clients, but for other designers, companies and individuals. It is no wonder, because it is such a versatile design tool that offers a vast array of patterns, textures, and colours to elevate any room.

Choosing wallpaper is ALWAYS recommended for me personally, but to help convince you, here are some tips on understanding when it is appropriate, where it can be most effective, and why you might prefer it over other decorating options like paint.

When to Choose Wallpaper

1. When You Want to Make a Statement

Wallpaper is an excellent choice when you’re looking to add a bold design element to your space. Intricate patterns, vibrant colours, and eye-catching patterns and motifs can create a bold feature wall or define the personality of a room.

2. When You Want a Long-lasting Finish

High-quality wallpaper can last significantly longer than paint. If you’re looking for a solution that requires less frequent updating or retouching, wallpaper can offer longevity, especially in low-traffic areas.

3. When the Wall Surface is Imperfect

If your walls have imperfections, such as cracks or uneven surfaces, wallpaper can be an excellent choice. Textured wallpaper in particular, or those with bold patterns can help mask these flaws more effectively than paint, which tends to highlight them.

4. When You Need Flexibility in Design

Some wallpapers are removable or peel-and-stick, making them ideal for temporary use in spaces where you want flexibility. This makes it an excellent option for renters or people who enjoy changing their décor frequently.

Where to Use Wallpaper…Anywhere…Everywhere

1. Living Room or Lounge Area

The living room is one of the best places to use wallpaper because it’s often a space for entertaining or relaxation, and you can afford to make it more visually dynamic. A statement wall behind a sofa or television can create a focal point, while more subtle designs can add texture and warmth to the overall environment.

2. Bedroom

In the bedroom, wallpaper can create a soothing or luxurious feel depending on your choice of pattern and texture. Using wallpaper behind the bed as an accent wall is a popular choice. However, wrapping all the walls in the bedroom, with calming colours and patterns that encourage relaxation can mimic the feel of a hotel room and envelope you in luxury.

3. Dining Room

Dining rooms, a personal favourite of mine, can benefit greatly from wallpaper with sophisticated designs, such as damask or metallic finishes, which can make the space feel formal and elegant and help elevate the ambiance, especially if you entertain guests frequently.

4. Hallways and Entryways

Hallways and entryways are often overlooked but can be a great opportunity to introduce wallpaper. Since these spaces are usually smaller, you can go for bolder patterns that might feel overwhelming in larger rooms. Wallpaper in entryways helps set the tone for the rest of your home.

5. Bathrooms

While bathrooms are generally more humid, certain wallpapers are designed to withstand moisture, making them suitable for powder rooms. There are even collections of wallpaper now available for full baths that are water-resistant, can withstand saturation and are installed directly in the shower instead of tile.

6. Kitchens

Kitchens are tricky because of the steam, grease, and general wear and tear. However, using wallpaper in specific zones like a breakfast nook or a backsplash area (with waterproof options) can add charm and personality to this functional space.

Why Choose Wallpaper Over Paint

1. Variety of Designs (obviously)

Wallpaper offers an unmatched range of designs, from floral patterns to geometric shapes, from minimalist to opulent. With paint, you’re limited to solid colors unless you invest in custom murals or decorative painting techniques, which can be time-consuming and expensive. But wallpapers are even available as picture murals with no repeat, or decorative borders for a subtle touch

2. Texture and Depth

Wallpaper provides texture, which paint alone cannot easily replicate. Whether it’s grasscloth, linen, or embossed patterns, wallpaper can add a tactile element to your walls, making a room feel more layered and dimensional. Even if crisp white walls are your preference, or monochromatic design, wallpaper adds so much depth, texture and interest to your design.

3. Durability

Good-quality wallpaper can last 10-15 years, far outlasting paint, which typically needs refreshing every three-five years. This makes wallpaper a more durable choice in the long run, particularly for rooms that don’t experience heavy wear and tear.

5. Environmental Factors

Eco-friendly wallpaper options, such as those made from recycled materials or with water-based inks, offer an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional wall paints that may emit VOCs (volatile organic compounds). This makes wallpaper a healthier choice for homes with children, elderly residents, or anyone concerned with indoor air quality.

6. Easy Maintenance

Most wallpapers today are easy to clean and maintain. Vinyl and washable options allow for simple wiping down, which is particularly useful in high-traffic or messy areas like kitchens, bathrooms, or children’s rooms.

I am a huge advocate of wallpaper. I choose it every single time. So should you.
