Crown Chaser faces stiff test in ‘Big Sub’ Memorial Trophy
Crown Chaser (right), with Shane Ellis, gets up in time to beat Run Julie Run (second right), Reyan Lewis atop, and Captain Sparrow with Edgard Zayas aboard, in the 2024 Jamaica Derby Classic race at Caymanas Park on Tuesday, August 6, 2024.

Crown Chaser faces stiff test in ‘Big Sub’ Memorial Trophy

FIFTEEN talented thoroughbreds, spearheaded by Jamaica Derby champion Crown Chaser, are to converge on Caymanas Park this afternoon to vie for the coveted $1.25-million Errol “Big Sub” Subratie Memorial Trophy.

This electrifying Overnight Allowance contest brings together three-year-olds and upward for a heart-stopping, one-mile (1,600m) showdown.

Crown Chaser, still basking in the glory of his August 6 Jamaica Derby triumph, leads the stellar field that promises to deliver an unforgettable afternoon of racing. His breathtaking late surge, edging out Run Julie Run and Captain Sparrow by a mere half-length, left fans in awe. The Anthony Nunes-trained champion clocked 2:38.0 (23.3 x 48.4 x 1:17.1 x 1:42.2) and has since trained impressively.

While Saturday’s event serves as a warm-up for Crown Chaser’s potential Jamaica Cup and Mouttet Mile bids, all eyes will be on his performance against older horses for the first time. Despite preferring two-turn races, Crown Chaser’s rapid development and class make him a formidable contender.

Joining Crown Chaser in the starting gate are several other equine stars, ensuring a captivating contest. They are Run Julie Run, the impressive Jamaica 1000 Guineas winner; Unbelievable Force, the gifted American-bred seeking her third-consecutive victory; and Sheer Delight, the highly touted American-bred debutant and Mouttet Mile hopeful.

The race is positioned as the 10th and final event on the day with a post time of 5:10 pm. First race is at 11:30 am.

Following her narrow second-place finish in the Jamaica Derby, Run Julie Run made a resounding statement on October 5, dominating a non-winners of four contest over one mile. This impressive victory showcased her exceptional talent as she slammed rivals by 4½ lengths in a smooth time of 1:38.1 (23.0 x 46.2 x 1:12.4 x 1:25.2).

With this convincing win, Run Julie Run cemented her status as a top contender. She’s poised to reverse her Jamaica Derby result and outpace Crown Chaser, as well as the rest of the field.

Unbelievable Force, a gifted American-bred mare, has made a lasting impression on local soil, boasting an impressive record of three wins from just five starts. Unbelievable Force now seeks her third-consecutive victory, and her past performances suggest she’s primed for success.

With her exceptional form and winning momentum Unbelievable Force is a formidable contender. Her impressive credentials make her a strong challenger for the Errol “Big Sub” Subratie Memorial Trophy.

Sheer Delight, specifically targeted for the prestigious Mouttet Mile on December 7, brings international experience to the starting gate. Sheer Delight has raced seven times and won two races. His wins came at Tampa Bay Downs on January 19 of this year and February 21, both at distances of one mile and 40 yards.

Sheer Delight has impressed in morning exercises, demonstrating exceptional fitness and readiness. This talented colt is poised to deliver a standout performance. With his impressive background and strong preparation Sheer Delight could upset the odds and challenge Crown Chaser, Run Julie Run, and Unbelievable Force for the Errol “Big Sub” Subratie Memorial Trophy.

While others dominate the spotlight, Money Miser quietly emerges as a potential spoiler. Money Miser has trained impressively leading up to this event, indicating a strong contender.

With the favourites focused on each other, Money Miser might steal the show. Don’t underestimate this dark horse’s potential to shake up the leaderboard.

With top-tier talent, lightning-fast speed, and unrelenting determination on display, the stage is set for an electrifying contest that will keep fans on the edge of their seats.
