Clarendon College lead seven teams into daCosta Cup Round of 16

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Defending champions Clarendon College, Cornwall College, St Elizabeth Technical and Garvey Maceo were among seven schools that booked places in the Round of 16 of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after wins in their final set of Round of 32 games on Tuesday.

Kemps Hill High, Manchester High and McGrath High also progressed to the next round, all joining Frome Technical, Happy Grove High and Glenmuir High who had booked their places in the previous set of games.

Also on Tuesday, Belair High beat Holmwood Technical High 2-0 in their rescheduled Group 5 game played at Brooks Park to keep their hopes of advancing to the Round of 16 alive.

Belair improved to four points, second behind Happy Grove who have already booked their spot while Holmwood Technical are out of contention after losing consecutive games in the round.

Meanwhile, another nine teams will be chasing five spots in the Round of 16 when the competition continues with six games on Wednesday, with the final qualifier to be decided on Thursday when two games are scheduled to be played.

On Tuesday, Clarendon College scored back-to-back wins after losing the first game of the round, beating Titchfield High 2-0 at the Wenbley Centre of Excellence with goals from Dameon Simms and Deandre Gallimore.

Clarendon College finished second in Group 7 on six points, behind Glenmuir High who were 3-0 winners over Paul Bogle to stay perfect in the round with three wins.

Both Cornwall College and STETHS left it late in their games against Spot Valley High and Mannings School respectively before coming out big winners.

Led by a double from Corlando Morris, Cornwall College beat Spot Valley High 4-0 in their Group 1 game with all four goals coming after the 77th minute of a match that started 45 minutes late.

Cornwall College were second in the group on five points, behind Kemps Hill High who edged Rusea’s High 1-0 in their game to top the group with seven points.

Jordan Blake gave STETHS the lead in the 60th minute, Justin McPherson made it 2-0 in the 79th minute and Henry Johnson got the third goal in the 88th minute as STETHS topped Group 3 on goal-difference over Manchester High, both on seven points.

Garvey Maceo had the biggest margin of victory on the day, hammering St Mary High 5-0 and were second in Group 8 on goal difference behind McGrath High who outscored Christiana High 3-2, both teams finishing on seven points each.

On Wednesday, Ocho Rios High need a point from their game against qualifiers Frome Technical when they meet at Llandilo Community Centre in their Group 2 game.

Black River High, who will face out of contention Cedric Titus High, could however sneak into the next round with a win and if Frome also win their game.

One point separate the top three schools in Group 4 which is wide open and any of the four can advance. Leaders Browns Town High, on four points, will face Alphansus Davis High (three points) at Manchester High while second placed Munro College, who are also on three points and still smarting from their loss to Browns Town, face Maldon High, who are on one point, at Munro.

Leaders Port Antonio High and Central High are both on four points and will meet at Glenmuir High, while Dinthill Technical, who are on two points, face Yallahs High who lost both previous games and are out of contention.
