Positive role models today, a solid future tomorrow

Dear Editor,

International Men’s Day, celebrated each year on November 19, is a powerful reminder of the importance of male role models in shaping society.

Here in Jamaica we are fortunate to have exceptional men across various fields — politics, education, music, business, and sports — who embody leadership, resilience, and dedication. Their positive influence today lays the foundation for a brighter, more secure tomorrow.

In politics, today’s leaders set the tone for future governance. Prime Minister Andrew Holness exemplifies modern leadership, focusing on economic growth, education, and infrastructure development. Opposition Leader Mark Golding, with his commitment to public service, shows that differences in policy can coexist with shared values of progress and unity.

These leaders, along with others serving in Parliament and at the community level, demonstrate to young men that politics is not just about power but about service and creating a better Jamaica. Their example inspires the next generation to engage in nation-building with integrity and purpose.

Education is the bedrock of progress, and Jamaican male educators today are shaping the leaders of tomorrow. Men like Professor Orlando Patterson, who continues to influence global thought through his work, and myself, a lecturer and author deeply committed to developing young minds, are excellent examples.

Educators like us invest not just in teaching but in mentoring, proving that knowledge shared today creates leaders equipped to solve tomorrow’s challenges. Their work inspires students to dream big, knowing that education is a tool for personal and national transformation.

Jamaican music has always been a cultural powerhouse, and today’s artistes carry forward a legacy of excellence. Shaggy, beyond his chart-topping hits, uses his platform for philanthropic efforts that uplift communities. Damian “Jr Gong” Marley continues to bridge tradition with modernity, inspiring the youth to embrace their culture while thinking globally.

These musicians show that success can serve a higher purpose and use their art and influence to inspire hope and drive positive change. Young men observing their journey understand that creativity paired with responsibility can build lasting legacies.

In the business world, contemporary leaders, like Michael Lee-Chin and Adam Stewart, illustrate how innovation and determination can create sustainable wealth. Lee-Chin’s investments through Portland Holdings drive economic growth, while Stewart continues to expand Sandals Resorts International, creating opportunities for thousands.

These business leaders demonstrate that the entrepreneurial spirit can have a ripple effect, inspiring young men to pursue their ambitions while contributing to national development. Their achievements today fuel a thriving economy that will support future generations.

Jamaica’s sportsmen continue to lead on the global stage, setting records and inspiring dreams. Usain Bolt, long after retiring from athletics, remains a symbol of determination and excellence. Similarly, Leon Bailey and Chris Gayle show that dedication to one’s craft can brings success and pride to one’s country.

Their stories motivate young Jamaicans to pursue excellence in their respective fields, proving that the discipline and hard work of today will create champions tomorrow.

Beyond the limelight, men in communities across Jamaica are leading by example. Pastors, youth mentors, and volunteers invest their time and energy in shaping responsible citizens. Their quiet efforts today will yield strong, cohesive communities in the future. These unsung heroes show that leadership is not always about visibility; it’s about impact. Their work underscores the importance of building a culture of care, discipline, and collaboration.

The positive male role models we celebrate today are sowing the seeds for a solid future tomorrow. By leading with integrity, innovation, and compassion, they set the stage for the next generation to thrive.

International Men’s Day is a call to action to recognise and support these men, ensuring their stories inspire others. Together they are proof that the example set today will echo for generations, building a Jamaica that is resilient, prosperous, and united.

Let us also encourage our men to follow in their footsteps, knowing that the choices made today shape the world of tomorrow.
