Think about these destinations for a Christmas getaway

Think about these destinations for a Christmas getaway

Home is where the heart is, but with over 160 countries celebrating Christmas, it’s a perfect opportunity to pack up your loved ones for a new experience without giving up the traditional magic of Yuletide.

Snow and warm fireplaces may be characteristic of Christmas movies, but for those craving warmth, the following destinations are just as merry and even more inviting.

The Turks and Caicos Islands – Best for those seeking a luxury Christmas getaway

An award-winning luxury destination boasting return visits from the likes of the Kardashians and Drake, Christmas in Turks promises kid friendly sweetness, crystal clear waters and lots of fun. This year Beaches Turks and Caicos aims to entice families with a partnership with Elf on the Shelf for kids and adults, including movies under the stars. For the post-Christmas vibes visitors can rub shoulders with locals in the yearly Boxing Day festival, Maskanoo.

The Philippines – Best for those seeking an extended celebration

As one of the only majority Christian nations in Asia, the Philippines is known for its months-long Christmas celebrations which can last from September to around the first week of January. Experiences will include traditional Christmas pageants and making handmade lanterns.  Hotels have been advertising Christmas tree lighting and Christmas specials for months, inviting guests to grab the family and spend time in the country’s lush forests and on its pristine beaches.

Jamaica – Best for those seeking a vibrant, culture-rich Christmas escape

With the most churches per square mile in the world, Christmas is a big deal in this island nation, and like everything else, Jamaicans approach it with a unique flair. From the Grand Market on Christmas Eve, to lighting ‘clappers’, jugs of Christmas sorrel and rum soaked cakes, the country offers an experience like no other. Boom boxes will usher in families to the sound of ‘Irie Christmas’ as they enjoy local seasonal cuisine and entertainment. While Christmas fairs and concerts grace the daytime, nightlife for the grown-ups also comes alive during the holiday season with dozens of events to choose from.

However, for those who embrace the chill, crave warm woollen coats and hot chocolate, the following destinations are cold on the outside but full of Christmas spirit.

New York City, USA – Best for those seeking a ‘big city’ Christmas visit

Shopping! Food! Times Square! No other place does a city Christmas quite like New York, New York. Families looking for a glitzy holiday escape will find it in the big apple as Fifth Avenue comes alive with festive storefronts perfect for eye-shopping or gift giving.  Ice skating and visiting the massive Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Centre are always hits with adults and children alike; and families can round out their visit with a trip to see the world famous Radio City Christmas show starring the Rockettes.

Strasbourg, France – Best for those seeking a European twist on Christmas

Paris may hold the attention for much of the year but when it comes to Christmas, Strasbourg is the star. Boasting the oldest Christmas market in France, and one of the oldest in Europe, the city has been dubbed Capitale de Noel, the ‘Capital of Christmas’. Artisan shops are one of the biggest attractions in Strasbourg with handmade specialty items featured in over 300 stalls throughout the city’s massive Christmas market called the “Christkindelsmärik” (the market of baby Jesus). Families will be sure to find the French city a unique and magical experience.

Finland – Best for those looking for a ‘storybook’ Christmas

Ever wished you could step into a Christmas movie? With a trip to this European country you just might be able to fulfil that dream. Pristine white snow paired with picturesque traditional homes are characteristic of Finland, not to mention the traditional gingerbread cookies and mulled wine available as warm snacks. Little ones will be delighted to find real life reindeer on the prowl along with Santas who look plucked from a cartoon – red cheeks, white beard and all. Sledding and skiing, plus saunas will round out a Christmas that will satisfy any ‘Frozen’ fan and families are especially lucky they might even glimpse the enchanting Northern Lights.

Which Christmas destination will you be jet setting off to this year?
