Bodega La Azul: Tupungato’s Hidden Gem

In the shadow of the majestic Cordón del Plata, a dramatic subrange of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza’s Uco Valley, Bodega La Azul has emerged as one of the most sought-after hidden gems of Argentina’s wine country. The journey of this boutique winery began not in 2003, when the family began bottling its own wine, but over 60 years ago, with Francisco Hinojosa’s arrival in these rugged, stony lands. What started as a venture into cultivating grapes for larger wineries has blossomed into a proud, family-run establishment that is deeply rooted in the traditions and terroir of Tupungato.

Bodega La Azul takes its name and identity from the vibrant hues of the surrounding landscapes, where the deep blues of the Andean skies meet rows of verdant vineyards. For decades, the family worked diligently, experimenting with various crops in this arid region before realising the exceptional potential of their vines. Today, La Azul is celebrated as one of the Uco Valley’s smallest yet most cherished wineries, producing around 75,000 bottles annually and offering visitors an intimate connection to its winemaking craft.

What sets Bodega La Azul apart is its unwavering commitment to quality and authenticity and owning its vineyards, some of which are over 50 years old, ensuring complete control of the winemaking process, from soil to bottle. Its wines, including the Azul Reserva, reflect a harmonious blend of innovation and tradition, with careful aging in French and American oak barrels to create balanced, elegant profiles. Signature varietals such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc embody the vibrant character of Mendoza’s high-altitude terroir. The Reserva, a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon aged to perfection, is a testament to its continued pursuit of excellence.

Bodega La Azul extends beyond winemaking, offering an experience that immerses guests in the soul of Argentine culture. Its rustic outdoor dining area, surrounded by flowers and the grandeur of the Andes, becomes a stage for culinary artistry and countless celebrations. The restaurant serves a traditional Argentine asado, five courses of perfectly grilled meats, empanadas, and indulgent desserts like flan casero. Each of these courses are thoughtfully paired with wines that showcase the vibrant flavours of the region, making for a gastronomic experience that thrills the senses.

In fact, lunch at Bodega La Azul feels less like a meal and more like a celebration. Imagine a leisurely, communal affair that mirrors the warmth of the family behind the winery. This experience encapsulates the essence of Mendoza: a marriage of fine wine, exceptional food, breathtaking landscapes and stellar hospitality. Visitors are welcomed with open arms to explore the winery’s vineyards, enjoy tastings, or stay in their boutique guesthouse, which combines comfort with stunning views of the Cordón del Plata.

Thursday Food recently explored Bodega La Azul and introduces the wines that were paired with our lunch:

Azul Gran Syrah is a 100 per cent varietal that has a deep red colour with violet hues. On the nose, currants, black pepper, leather, chocolate and some floral notes are exhibited. On the palate, it’s a wine with character and structure but with sweet as well as pleasant tannins.

Azul Gran Matilda Cabernet Franc is a bright red wine that is made from 100 per cent Cabernet Franc. Aromas expressed are red fruits, smoked pepper and minerals, as well as notes of tobacco and chocolate provided by the oak. In the mouth it is a wine with well-present sweet tannins, marked acidity and a long finish.

Azul Reserva is a wine blend that is made up of 60 per cent Malbec and 40 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon with a very intense, clear cherry red matrix. This blend exhibits intense aromas of forest fruits and pepper, combined with aromas of vanilla and chocolate. Its tannins are pleasant, full-bodied, while being both complex and intense, with refreshing acidity, and a long finish.

Azul Gran Matilda Malbec is made from 100 per cent Malbec grapes and has a bright violet red colour. On the nose the aromas perceived are red fruits, jam, and notes of vanilla, smoke and chocolate provided by the oak. On the palate it is a wine with well-marked tannins that has a pleasant and long finish.

Azul Chardonnay is a bright white wine that is without oak influence but still very refreshing. Its fruity and floral aromas along with its flavours, as well as its balanced acidity, make it a versatile and pleasant wine. A perfect label for wine enthusiasts who prefer lighter white wines without the influence of barrel aging.

In a region now known for its state-of-the-art facilities, La Azul stands out for its down-to-earth charm and personal touch, inviting guests not just to taste wine but to partake in the history of a family’s perseverance, passion, and deep respect for the land. Whether you’re enjoying a glass of the signature Malbec against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks or savouring a long asado lunch with friends, Bodega La Azul leaves an indelible impression. It is a tribute to Argentina’s wine heritage and a reminder that the best wines are those shared in good company.
Salud!
