Christmas Eve delight: Social Aviator soars to victory in SunnySide Stakes
The festive atmosphere at Caymanas Park on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, December 24, 2024, was electrified as Social Aviator, ridden by Tevin Foster, staged a thrilling comeback to win the SunnySide Stakes.
The maiden special weight contest for native-bred two-year-olds over 5 furlong (1,000m) round race was a true test of Social Aviator’s mettle, and she emerged triumphant, crossing the finish line in 1:01.1, a length and a half ahead of Margarita (Dane Dawkins) and Lady Babita (Reyan Lewis).
As the gates burst open, Social Aviator, ridden by Tevin Foster, found herself lagging behind the early pace, with Margarita seizing the lead ahead of Riley J (Calvin Bailey),
Linguist (Omar Walker), and Giant Vigorous. (Rudolph Paige). As the field approached the half-mile turn, Margarita maintained her advantage, while Social Aviator remained out of contention, seemingly a beaten horse.
However, Foster, sensing an opportunity, waited patiently for the perfect moment to strike. As Margarita attempted to break away from the pack, Foster coaxed Social Aviator into a blistering sprint. The filly responded magnificently, unleashing a devastating burst of speed that left the crowd gasping in awe.
Like a cannon ball on fire, Social Aviator shot forward, devouring the ground with every stride. Foster’s expert handling and the filly’s unyielding spirit combined to produce a thrilling finish as Social Aviator surged past Margarita to claim victory.
Trainer Jason DaCosta was beaming with pride as he reflected on Social Aviator’s impressive performance.
“I am happy with the performance,” he said, his voice filled with satisfaction. “She got a rough start, but she was very professional. She weaved her way through horses and came forward for the win, and I was very happy with the performance.”
DaCosta’s concerns about Social Aviator’s rough start were palpable, but he was thrilled with the way she recovered and dominated the competition.
“As a two-year-old, normally, when they get a rough start like that, they don’t recover,” he explained. “But I’m happy that she overcame it and ran on strongly. I think she has a bright future ahead of her.”
The SunnySide Stakes did not unfold as planned, but jockey Foster’s calm and confident ride proved to be the decisive factor. DaCosta praised Foster’s skill and composure, saying, “The jockey kept his cool and rode her confidently, and it all worked out.”
