Chronic Law ‘King of Youtube’ streaming in Ja

KINGSTON, Jamaica— As entertainers reflect on the year they had in music, many are tabulating their successes as part of annual assessments.

Well, so are we.

In our review of entertainers who dominated listenership across Jamaica, Observer Online turned to statistics from YouTube charts.

According to the platform, still considered to be the number one streaming site for many Jamaicans, Chronic Law is king.

According to the platform’s data, ‘Law Boss’ is leading his fellow dancehall colleagues by millions of views as he amassed a total of 163 million views between December 29, 2023 and December 29, 2024.

Masicka, who claimed the number two spot on the site’s chart, gained a total of 79.1 million views over the same period.

Freshly-freed deejay, Vybz Kartel rounded out the list’s top three with a total of 72 million views for 2024.

Squash, newcomer Skippa, Valiant Rajah Wild, Alkaline, Kraff Gad and DJ Mac completed the list’s top 10.

The list, which ended with 15 of the site’s highest viewed artistes, did not include any female dancehall artiste.

In the breakdown, which can be accessed via charts.youtube.com, lists Kingston, New York and Port of Spain, Trinidad as places where Chronic Law had the biggest audiences. ‘Don’t Fall’, ‘Empty’, ‘Wanted Luv’, ‘Walk With Faith’ and ‘Higher Life’, his collaboration with Kranium, were among his most listened to tracks.

While Chronic Law’s listenership was mostly based across Jamaica and the Caribbean, Masicka, who occupied the runner-up spot, had a more international audience. The ‘Limelight’ singer had listeners as far away as Accra, Ghana and Nairobi, Kenya. His most listened songs included his hit singles, ‘Whites’, ‘Trophies’, ‘20 Matic’, ‘Who Fi Stop Wi’ and ‘Tyrant’.

Vybz Kartel, who was released from prison in July after spending 13 years behind bars, saw his listenership skyrocketing post release.

According to YouTube’s data, the entertainer amassed approximately 15 million views between August 1 and 6. His numbers remained consistent until year end. Kingston, Nairobi, New York, London and Georgetown, Guyana were among the places fans tuned in from the most. Among his highest streamed songs were: ‘Fever’, ‘Coloring This Life’, ‘The Comet’, ‘Wine to the Top’ and ‘Summer Time’.

While Chronic Law, Masicka and Kartel dominated overall listenership on the platform, neither artistes had the most listened to (solo) songs of the year according to the data. YouTube’s statistics show that Valiant and DJ Mac’s Lumbar was the most-listened to track between December 29, 2023 and December 29, 2024 with a total of 8.61 million views. Shenseea’s ‘Hit and Run’ which featured Masicka came in at number two with 8.24 million views while Intence’s ‘SHH’ rounded out the top three with 7.81 million views for the listed period. Squash’s hit single, ‘Big Breeze’ (6.97 million views) and Armanii’s ‘HAAD’ (6.53 million views) rounded out the top 5.

Aside from Shenseea, Jada Kingdom was the only other female with a song on the site’s top 15 songs of the year list. Her single, ‘Top Tier’ had 5.96 million views for the stipulated period, landing her just outside the top 10 as she occupied the number 11 spot.
