GLASGOW, Scotland (CMC) — Scottish Premier League side Rangers have set their sights on bolstering their defensive ranks with the addition of Jamaican international Richard King.

The 23-year-old, who currently plays for Jamaica Premier League champions Cavalier FC, has already garnered international attention with 19 caps for the Reggae Boyz.

The 6ft 2in King enjoyed a stint in Europe during 2023 where he had a loan deal with Icelandic side IBV Vestmannaeyjar. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with reports last year linking him to several English Premier League clubs, including West Ham, Brighton, Newcastle, and Aston Villa, who reportedly scouted the centre-back.

According to the Daily Record, Rangers’ technical director Nils Koppen sees King as an ideal candidate for the club as they look to invest in young talent capable of delivering success on the pitch while also offering long-term financial returns.

The need for defensive reinforcements has become critical for manager Philippe Clement. Injuries have sidelined key players like John Souttar, Leon Balogun, and Dujon Sterling, while Ben Davies is currently out on loan at Birmingham City.

With King’s potential and pedigree, Rangers appear keen to secure his signature; however, it is still not yet clear if they will be willing to pay the fee of close to one million GBP for the deal to be done.
