Exploring Bodega Puerta Del Abra

Argentina, long celebrated for its robust Malbecs and high-altitude vineyards, is a nation that effortlessly weaves tradition and innovation into its winemaking fabric. From the sun-drenched plains of Mendoza to the windswept terrains of Patagonia, Argentine wine regions are as diverse as they are captivating. Yet, a new chapter in this legacy is being written in the Buenos Aires province, where Bodega Puerta del Abra is redefining the possibilities of terroir and varietals in a burgeoning DOC (Denominación de Origen Controlada) region. Here, the rolling pampas meets a bold vision, crafting wines that honours tradition while daring to innovate.

Established in 2013, the winery is situated in Balcarce, approximately 50 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. This proximity to the ocean, combined with the surrounding Tandilia mountain range, creates a unique microclimate characterised by temperate conditions and significant annual rainfall ranging from 800 to 1,100 millimetres. The vineyard spans 12 hectares, cultivating varietals such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Albariño, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Bonarda, and Tannat. In 2022, due largely to the efforts of Bodega Puerta del Abra, Balcarce achieved recognition as a Geographical Indication (GI), a milestone designation that underscores the region’s potential and the bodega’s commitment to quality and innovation in Argentine winemaking.

Bodega Puerta del Abra is a trailblazer in a region historically overlooked for viticulture. While this area lacks the dramatic altitudes of Mendoza or the arid climate of Cafayate, it offers a unique terroir characterised by fertile soils, a temperate climate, and oceanic breezes that imbue the vines with a distinctive character. These conditions provide an ideal canvas for cultivating varietals that thrive on balance and nuance, a vision that winemakers have passionately pursued.

Founded by visionary oenophiles with a deep respect for the land, Bodega Puerta del Abra epitomises the spirit of exploration. Their Insólito collection, aptly named for its “uncommon” approach, showcases their dedication to producing wines of exceptional quality and personality. The result is a portfolio that not only elevates the reputation of Buenos Aires as a wine-producing region but also invites wine lovers to experience a new dimension of Argentine winemaking.

While this bodega shines as a rising star, it exists within the larger tapestry of Argentina’s celebrated wine regions. Each region contributes its unique voice to the symphony of Argentine wine, creating a rich and diverse narrative. Known as the cradle of Argentine wine, Mendoza’s high-altitude vineyards and sunny climate produce wines of exceptional depth and concentration. Malbec reigns supreme here, offering bold flavours of black fruit, violets, and a hint of spice.

In the north, Salta’s extreme altitudes and arid climate give rise to Torrontés, a white varietal known for its aromatic intensity and crisp acidity. Its floral and citrus notes make it a refreshing counterpoint to the region’s rugged landscape. Patagonia’s cooler climate and pristine environment produce wines of remarkable elegance and finesse. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive here, displaying delicate fruit flavours and vibrant acidity.

As a newcomer to the viticultural scene, Buenos Aires province is carving out its identity with wines that reflect its unique terroir. Bodega Puerta del Abra exemplifies this potential, offering a fresh perspective on Argentine winemaking. The Insólito collection is a testament to the bodega’s commitment to crafting wines that are as expressive as they are memorable. Each varietal tells a story of its origins, revealing layers of flavour, aroma, and texture that transport the drinker to the heart of the vineyard.

Insólito Albariño is a bright pale yellow-coloured wine with a medium aromatic intensity. On the nose, it exhibits fruity aromas of white peach, mango, along with citrus notes and hints of orange peel. On the palate it is a wine with a pleasant, unctuous entrance and a refreshing acidity that has a persistent and fragrant finish.

Insólito Bonarda is cherry red in colour with ruby highlights which gives it a clean and bright appearance. Aromas of fresh red fruits such as cherry and plum, as well as aromas of strawberry jam and raisins, are perceived on the nose, in addition to some herbal notes of laurel and menthol. In the mouth, this bonarda has a pleasant entry, with a present acidity (typical of the area), sweet, silky-textured tannins and a medium body which makes it a very balanced and persistent wine.

Insólito Cabernet Franc has an intense ruby red colour with ruby-coloured reflections, exhibiting aromas of red fruits and the typical pyrazine notes of roasted red pepper. Aromas from its time in French barrels are also present: vanilla, tobacco, chocolate and leather. On the palate it has a gentle and delicate entry, ripe tannins balanced with its vibrant acidity. Once again the red fruit and pepper are present and a hint of graphite appears. Medium-bodied, elegant and complex wine.

Insólito Riesling is delicately yellow in colour with greenish hues, a clear and bright wine. On the nose we can discover aromas of citrus fruit, lime, apricot and mineral sensations such as graphite. In the mouth it is unctuous and full-bodied, which balances its marked acidity and mineral profile, resulting in an aftertaste that is persistent and long-lasting.

Whether you are savouring the bold complexity of their Bonarda, the refreshing elegance of their Riesling, or the vibrant character of their Albariño, Bodega Puerta del Abra invites you on a journey into the heart of Argentina’s evolving wine story. As the country’s wine legacy continues to grow, and with it, the promise of discovery, let Bodega Puerta del Abra guide you to the next chapter in Argentine viticulture, with their story of tradition, exploration, and the boundless pleasures of the vine. Salud!
