GEORGETOWN, Guyana, (CMC) – The Government of Guyana on Wednesday, extradited Parmanand Singh, a Guyanese citizen, to the United States.

Singh, who waived his right to an extradition hearing, consented to return to the United States to face judicial proceedings related to a fatal vehicular incident.

The extradition follows a formal request made by the United States government in September 2024.

Acting promptly on the request, the Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn, requested that Chief Magistrate (ag) Faith Mc Gusty to initiate the necessary legal processes for the extradition.

Singh is accused of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, with his blood-alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit.

In September 2024, Singh collided with another vehicle, resulting in the death of its sole occupant. Singh himself was injured in the crash and received medical treatment at Broward Health Medical Center in Florida.

While receiving treatment, two blood samples were lawfully taken from Singh.

Laboratory tests revealed blood alcohol levels of 0.157 g/dL and 0.158 g/dL—well above Florida’s legal limit of 0.08 g/dL for driving under the influence.

Following the accident, Singh’s arrest was executed under a warrant issued by Chief Magistrate (ag) Faith Mc Gusty. The prosecution team representing the interests of the United States included Ms Lisa Cave, assistant director of public prosecutions;  Ormella Gladstone, treaty officer at the Ministry of Home Affairs; and Sergeant Stephan Hinds from the Major Crimes Unit, who led the investigation.

On January 3, 2025, Singh was formally committed to custody for extradition by  Mc Gusty. He remained in custody until his extradition was carried out on January 15.

This successful extradition demonstrates Guyana’s strong commitment to international cooperation and its determination to ensure justice is served, regardless of borders.
