Popcaan’s 2014 debut full-length album Where We Come From (#197); Sean Paul’s Grammy-winning, multi-platinum-selling Dutty Rock (#189); and Koffee’s Gifted (#156) are the only albums by Jamaicans that made Rolling Stone magazine’s The 250 Greatest Albums of the 21st Century So Far list.

The respected music and trade publication revealed the standouts on Friday January 10.

Beyonce’s Lemonade, released in 2016, topped the tally at #1. Other albums topping the list included My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West (released in 2010); SOS by SZA (2022); good kid, m.A.A.d city by Kendrick Lamar (2012); Folklore by Taylor Swift (2020); Stankonia by Outkast (2000), Blonde by Frank Ocean (2016); Kid A by Radiohead (2000); and Unu Verano Sin Ti by Bad Bunny (2022).

In an interview with the Jamaica Observer on Wednesday, Popcaan shared his excitement about his album making the list.

“It’s an honour to see Where We Come From being recognised by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest albums of the 21st century. This means so much to me because the album represents my story, my journey, and where I’m coming from as an artiste and a person from St Thomas, Jamaica to the world. To know it has connected with people globally and now holds a place on such an iconic list is humbling. It shows the power of staying true to yourself and your roots,” said Popcaan.

Where We Come From, which debuted and peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart in June 2014, was released by Mixpak Records.

Popcaan collaborated with several producers on the album, among them Dre Skull, who also served as the album’s executive producer; Dubbel Dutch; Anju Blaxx; Jaime YVP; and Adde Instrumentals.

Popcaan spoke about the work that went into the making of the album.

“Where We Come From is a decade old and it was a work of love. I poured my heart and soul into every track, making sure it reflected my life, my experiences, and the stories of the people around me. It took countless hours in the studio, working with talented producers like Dre Skull and my team fine-tuning the sound to make sure it was authentic and impactful. The goal was always to create something timeless, and seeing it still resonate with listeners years later means a lot to me,” said the artiste.

He is featured on another album that made the Rolling Stone list. His collaborated with Jamie XX and rapper Young Thug on the gold- and platinum-certified single I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times), which is featured on the album
In Colour, ranks at #187.

The 20-track Dutty Rock by Sean Paul featured production from The Neptunes, Jeremy Harding, Delroy “Delly Ranks” Foster, Steven “Lenky” Marsden, Troyton Rami, and Steelie and Clevie.

Dutty Rock was a groundbreaking album for a Jamaican dancehall artiste. The set opened at #9 on the Billboard 200 album chart in 2002 with first week sales of 65,000 copies. It also sold well outside of North America, clocking respectable positions on album charts in several European territories. In the United Kingdom, it debuted at #2, while in Canada it hit the Top 10.

The album hit a number of firsts. It was the first album by a Jamaican artiste to score five Top 20 singles in North America and the first album by a Jamaican artiste to debut inside the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 album chart.

Dutty Rock yielded #1 hits with the collaboration Baby Boy with Beyonce and Get Busy, which was produced by Marsden for his inescapable Diwali rhythm. Other hits from Dutty Rock included I’m Still In Love With You featuring Sasha, a track that was featured on Steelie and Clevie’s Old To The New compilation.

I’m Still In Love With You reached #14 in the United States.

Another song, Like Glue, produced by Tony Kelly on his Buy Out rhythm, reached #13 in the US and hit the Top 10 in the UK, Canada, Ireland, and Switzerland.

Dutty Rock would go on to sell over three million copies in the US. Globally, the album sold more than six million units.

At the 2004 Grammy Awards, Dutty Rock won for Best Reggae Album. A few months earlier, Sean Paul won the MTV Europe award for Best New Artiste.

With hits like Lockdown and West Indies, Gifted is the debut studio album by Jamaican reggae singer Koffee. It was released on March 25, 2022 by Promised Land Recordings and Columbia Records.

Gifted debuted at #2 on the US Billboard Reggae Albums chart with 3,500 album-equivalent units. The album has sold more than 200,000 units.
