More help for St Elizabeth residents post-Beryl
TWENTY-SIX residents of St Elizabeth who were impacted when Hurricane Beryl skirted the island last year have received much-needed support.
They received essential items such as stoves, couches, mattresses, and pillows — all aimed at restoring comfort and a sense of normality during a challenging time — from CB Foods and Courts, at a PAN Christmas Giveback initiative held at Black River Preparatory School.
The festive atmosphere was enhanced with complimentary PAN chicken, drinks, branded merchandise, and music, creating a joyful and welcoming celebration as the team also sought to spread a little Christmas cheer.
Nicole Hall, the commercial marketing manager for CB Foods, shared the reason for hosting the initiative.
“After relocating PAN to St Elizabeth due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl, it was essential for us to remind the community that they remain in our thoughts even after the event.
“PAN has always represented more than just an event; it’s about the people, their resilience, and their stories. We wanted this initiative to make a meaningful impact, especially during a season that symbolises love and generosity. Christmas, with its spirit of giving, felt like the perfect time to reaffirm our commitment to our communities, not only in celebration but also in times of recovery and need,” said Hall.
She added: “Our CEO, Garth Channer, supported this initiative as he is from St Elizabeth and connected us with the councillor, making this initiative close to home. Unicomer Group, through Courts, led the initiative.”
The CB Group has a long-standing tradition of giving back, which is deeply embedded in the company’s values.
“Through CB Foods and our family of brands, we actively support initiatives year round, ensuring our efforts positively impact the communities we serve. Last Christmas, we extended that tradition by leading treats at the St Ann Infirmary and the Hanover Infirmary. Our staff contributed their time and effort, alongside contributions from CB Chicken and Caribbean Passion, making the initiative even more special. Additionally, we partnered with groups like Friends Who Care, reinforcing our belief that collaboration amplifies the impact of giving,” said Hall.
Hall also spoke about partnering with Courts for the initiative.
“By partnering with Courts, we could effectively channel resources, providing support that truly made a difference in the lives of those most impacted,” Hall said.
Councillor Karl Whyte (Pedro Plains Division, Jamaica Labour Party) reportedly guided the selection for the recipients based on his first-hand knowledge of the community and its needs.
“Hurricane Beryl left lasting scars on both the physical and emotional landscape of the residents of South Western St Elizabeth…The needs and pleas for help were everywhere,” said Whyte.
He said when CB Group reached out to help, it felt like a prayer answered.
“The provision of items to the residents was both touching and a generous gesture of kindness. The recipients are truly grateful for their gifts. I would like to thank Courts and CB Foods for this amazing initiative. It is acts of kindness like these that will help us heal and recover stronger,” Whyte said.
Simone McFarlane, senior brand manager at Courts, said her company decided to collaborate with CB Foods because of the opportunity to spread joy during the holiday season.
“… [W]e believe in the power of community and shared responsibility. CB Foods has a long-standing reputation for supporting local families, and we admire their commitment to uplifting those in need. Together, we saw an opportunity to spread joy during the holiday season and bring hope to those who may be struggling,” said McFarlane.
