Pack Plays puts on a show in Eileen Cliggott Memorial Trophy feature
In a dazzling display of speed and power, Pack Plays, trained by Ricardo Mathie, left his rivals in the dust to claim the $2-million Eileen Cliggott Memorial Trophy feature at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
With Panamanian jockey Ismael Velasquez aboard, the four-year-old American-bred bay/brown colt
Pack Plays produced a thrilling performance, winning the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance contest by a dominant 4 lengths.
Pack Plays covered the six and a half furlongs (1,300m) in a slick 1:18.1 (23.2 x 46.4 x 1:11.3), leaving no doubt about his superiority.
From the starting gates, Pack Plays and Atomica (Raddesh Roman) engaged in a brief battle for the lead before Pack Plays began to assert his dominance. Approaching the half-mile (800m) turn, Pack Plays started to pull away from Atomica, and from that point on, the outcome was never in doubt.
Pack Plays cruised to the finish line, followed by Wall Street Trader (Shavon Townsend) and Atomica. Interestingly, both Pack Plays and Wall Street Trader are owned by Vincent Maine.
Meanwhile, former champion jockey Shane Ellis booted home two winners on the nine-race card to take the riding honours. Ellis won aboard Tigeramedat for trainer Anthony Nunes in the second race and Unruly Mo in the eighth race for trainer Oral Hayden.
Racing continues today with another nine-race programme. First post is at high noon.
