Javid George of Dominica making waves at Harbour View

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Dominica’s striker Javid George announced himself to Jamaica scoring his first goal as Harbour View whipped Dunbeholden FC 4-1 last Sunday.

The 26-year-old is from the tiny island known as “Nature Island” because of its natural beauty, renowned bubbling hot springs, mountains, waterfalls and tropical rainforests.

But George has temporarily left all that for the love of football and is in the land of wood and water to uplift his career.

The striker, who recently joined Harbour View in the Jamaica Premier League, told the Jamaica Observer he was just happy to get off the mark in his fourth game.

“It was very exciting; great feeling in front of the fans at home. I really enjoy it and my teammates are very supportive,” said George.

Coming from an island with a population of approximately 66,000, George has registered three goals in 34 caps for Dominica.

He knows playing in Jamaica will only help hone his craft which will help his national team as he gave his thoughts on Jamaica’s club football.

“It’s a good quality, very physical, I must say but back home, you have a little more time on the ball. Here it’s faster, more quality,” George said. He more than held his own against some rugged defenders from Dunbeholden in Odane Samuels and Chevoy Watkin.

Not many fans would have known of him locally, but when he opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a close-range header, the pressure of expectation was lifted.

“I’m coping well because they really make me feel welcome into the team. I feel like at home,” said George.

The Harbour View team, which won the league in 2022, is struggling badly and temporarily climbed off the bottom off the league when they defeated Dunbeholden.

But it’s back to square one as they crashed 0-1 to promoted Racing United a few days later and are second from bottom in 13th spot on 16 points.

The Stars of the East have lost 13 of their 21 games with just four victories and are in a relegation dogfight.

“We just have to continue working harder,” said George.

“It’s not always about the beginning. It’s always the end,” he added.
