Jamaica ranks 9th among world’s most affordable destinations
Jamaica remains one of the most budget-friendly international destinations, even as global travel costs surge.
New data released from US-based insurance agency InsureMyTrip shows that the average cost of a vacation in 2025 has climbed to US$7,401, up from US$5,960 in 2024. However, Jamaica continues to offer a relatively lower-cost alternative, with an average trip costing US$4,145, ranking it ninth among the most budget-friendly destinations globally.
This news around the destination’s affordability comes as Jamaica’s tourism sector continues its upward trajectory. Last year, the country welcomed 4.3 million visitors in 2024, generating US$4.3 billion in revenue.
Looking ahead, the outlook for 2025 remains optimistic. As part of its growth strategy, Jamaica is aiming to achieve its ‘5x5x5’ target—welcoming five million visitors and generating US$5 billion in earnings by the end of the year.
According to the data released, Jamaica remains one of the more cost-effective options in the Caribbean, but regional competition is intensifying. The Philippines (US$3,336), Mexico (US$3,441), and Colombia (US$3,497) ranked as the three most affordable international destinations in 2024, offering lower average trip costs. Within the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic (US$3,882), The Bahamas (US$3,687), and Bermuda (US$3,821) also ranked among the top 10, highlighting a broader trend of competitive pricing in the region.
Jamaica remains less expensive than Aruba (US$4,259) but slightly pricier than some of its direct competitors. While cost is a factor, destination appeal, accessibility, and infrastructure play critical roles in attracting visitors. Jamaica benefits from strong airline connectivity and a well-established tourism industry, but maintaining affordability will be key as travel costs rise.
Jamaica’s tourism sector has shown resilience despite global economic pressures. The United States remains the island’s largest source market, with significant visitor traffic from New York and Florida. However, in an effort to diversify, Jamaica is expanding its outreach to new markets, including India, where a dedicated marketing campaign is set to launch in 2025.
At the same time, rising operational costs could test the country’s affordability ranking. Hotel and airline pricing has been under pressure from inflationary trends, but an expansion of over 2,000 new hotel rooms from brands such as Princess, Hard Rock Hotels, Secrets, and Viva Wyndham is expected to help accommodate increasing demand, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has said.
