Abigail Wolfe targets 100m Champs gold for Wolmer’s
AFTER making history with a gold medal in the 100m for Holy Childhood High School in 2023, Abigail Wolfe has her sights set on another triumph, this time representing Wolmer’s High School for Girls.
The talented sprinter, who boasts a personal best of 11.58 seconds, kicked off her 2024 season in style, clocking an impressive 11.85 seconds in her opening race at the Camperdown Classic on Saturday at the National Stadium.
With her strong start the 18-year-old Wolfe has positioned herself as one of the favourites for gold in the 100m event at this year’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, which will be held from March 25-29 at the National Stadium.
“This is definitely an indication of where I am in my preparations. Even though I was thinking of a faster time, I think this is a good start. I finished my season early last year and I haven’t run a 100m in a long while, so I think this is a great start,” Wolfe said.
Last season her individual campaign was derailed by injury, after she was hurt at the Carifta Trials and was only able to compete in the 4x100m Relay at Champs, where her team secured third place. Now, Wolfe stated that she is determined to finish the season healthy and make significant improvements.
“I don’t want what happened last year to happen again. I want to finish my season healthy and improve my personal best,” she stated. “My preparations have been going really well. Every day is different and I just have to stay focused and pray a lot. Sometimes I don’t understand what God is doing but I ask him for clarity to keep me motivated and have faith in him.”
Wolfe underscored that she is aware of the tough competition ahead but stated that she remains focused on her own journey rather than worrying about her rivals.
“I know that I have some good competition this year but I am not worrying about what anybody else is doing. I know that when the time is right I will perform well and we will see how it goes at Champs,” she said.
With her passion for track and field and an unwavering hunger for victory, Wolfe shared that she is laser-focused on winning the gold medal in her final year at Champs.
“I am hungry to get a gold medal again and I am very motivated because of what happened last season. I am just determined overall because I love track and field and I love winning. I don’t like losing and so I am just ready to get to that place again,” she remarked.
