JPL resumes with three games
FORMER champions Portmore United and promoted Racing United will hope to pick up where they left off when the Jamaica Premier League resumes today with three games, following a break as a result of the friendly internationals between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
Three games are scheduled to be played today and another four tomorrow, as the fierce competition at both ends of the table is set to resume.
Fourth-place Portmore United will take on a resurgent Dunbeholden FC in a St Catherine derby; Racing United will go after a fifth-straight win when they host last-placed Humble Lion; and Tivoli Gardens will take on the other promoted team, Chapelton Maroons, at Stadium East. All games set to kick off at 3:00pm.
Dunbeholden FC are coming off impressive wins over Chapelton Maroons and Montego Bay United, moving up to 10th place in the points tables, and are expected to give Portmore United a stern test today.
The teams had played out a six-goal 3-3 draw in their first-round meeting, and today’s game could see another flood of goals as Dunbeholden FC look to leapfrog Molynes United and take over ninth place, at least for 24 hours.
Portmore United, however, are unbeaten from their last eight outings and would have set their sights on closing the gap with Montego Bay United, who play away to defending champions Cavalier FC on Thursday.
Racing United are arguably the in form team at the moment, with four straight wins, and will be hoping to extend their club record streak to five straight when they host Humble Lion who, in addition to losing their last four matches, have won just once in their last 15 games.
Only leaders Mt Pleasant FA, who had a record 12 straight wins, and Arnett Gardens, who won six straight in the first round, have had better runs than Racing United this season, while Portmore United also had four straight victories in the first round.
The Anthony Patrick-coached Racing United have allowed just one goal in their four wins, a defensive record matched only by Portmore United over the same span of games.
Meanwhile, both Tivoli Gardens and Chapelton will be desperate for a win.
For Tivoli, they are determined to secure three points as they look to stay close to the top six, while Chapelton Maroons will be eager to create some space between themselves and the relegation zone.
Tivoli Gardens had won the first-round game 3-2 and would welcome another win today, after being bumped out of seventh place by Racing United.
The teams have combined for two wins in their last 10 games combined.
