Kingston, Jamaica — Bags filled with hundreds of pounds of refuse were collected from the shoreline at the Rae Town Fishing Village in a massive clean-up effort led by university students and community members.

The initiative, dubbed “Rescue and Revive,” is a school project spearheaded by Ardrene Edwards, a final-year student and campaign manager. Edwards said she chose the location because of her deep passion for keeping the environment clean and sustainable for all.

“Too often, people—especially those in my age group—pay little or no attention to the environment,” Edwards noted. “So I was delighted to see the number of University of Technology (Utech) students who participated.”

The main sponsor of the event, Cement Company Limited, praised the cleanup initiative, highlighting its environmental and energy benefits. A company spokesperson revealed that the plastic waste collected from the shoreline will be repurposed to generate clean energy at their plant.

“This is a great way of reducing waste while also saving energy for our company,” the spokesperson said.

In addition to the students, several community members, primarily fishermen, also joined in the effort, helping to remove waste and restore the shoreline.

The clean-up event highlights the growing concern over pollution in coastal communities and demonstrates the power of student-led initiatives in fostering environmental awareness and action.
