Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run pours out the milk of human kindness

According to gofundme, the great charity facilitator, a series of studies found that neurons in the portion of the brain associated with a sense of satisfaction start firing when a person chooses to donate money.

“These results are a fascinating reminder of the intrinsic motivation that many people share to make the world a better place,” said gofundme.

We are sure the organisation was not thinking specifically of Jamaica’s Sagicor or its Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run, but the statement could not be more reflective of the annual event, generously supported by an ever-growing number of runners, wheelers, walkers, volunteers, and, importantly, donors.

It is very heart-warming to hear Sagicor President and CEO Mr Chris Zacca announce that the 27-year-old event has continued to break previous year records with the take this year being a whopping $128 million.

That has brought the proceeds from the run to more than $875 million for close to 30 deserving entities since its inception in 1999, allowing Mr Zacca to be able to boast that it is now the “Caribbean’s largest and most impactful road race”.

Moreover, the record 30,477 registrants indicate that Jamaicans are pouring out the milk of human kindness in them in greater quantity each year, ignoring hard economic times to contribute to the betterment of their compatriots.

“This year’s Sigma Run has been nothing short of extraordinary. To exceed our target by such a significant margin while also welcoming a record number of registrations is a true testament to the generosity and compassion of the Jamaican people,” Mr Zacca summed it up appropriately.

Proceeds from this year’s staging will spur critical health-care improvements to Kingston Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit; Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre; and Father Ho Lung and Friends Foundation’s Bethlehem Home, all serving vulnerable communities.

We commend all those who have selflessly poured into the Sagicor Sigma Run and the many other charitable events without which this country could never make progress or strive.

They happily remind us of some of our favourite quotes regarding the act of giving, some of which we share below, in the hope that it will encourage those who do to continue to find happiness and motivation through their generosity:

“Do all the good you can,

By all the means you can,

In all the ways you can,

In all the places you can,

At all the times you can,

To all the people you can,

As long as ever you can.”

— Mr John Wesley

“You cannot do a kindness too soon because you never know how soon it will be too late.” — Mr Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.” — Mr H Jackson Brown Jr

“For it is in giving that we receive.” — Francis of Assisi

“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.” — Ms Maya Angelou

“Generosity is giving more than you can, and pride is taking less than you need.” — Mr Kahlil Gibran

“Your greatest gift is the ability to share your blessings; it’s what makes life meaningful.” — anonymous

“One of the best feelings in the world is giving. The positive energy is contagious. With just one act of kindness, you can inspire.” — success.com

Heartiest congratulations to Mr Zacca and his team at Sagicor.
