“Seventy-five thousand dollars have been raised in what, two minutes?!”
Those were the words of auctioneer Rachael White Young, who, in record time, secured three donations of US$25,000 for Hanover Charities Container of Love at the 68th Sugar Cane Ball. This was moments after fielding bids from the room for five hot-ticket live auction items, which were sold for just under US$50,000.
The Christie’s New York specialist, who in-between bids, charmed with compliments like, “You look beautiful in your floral gown, did I tell you that?” went on to raise US$148,000 to fill the 40-ft container, with supplies to benefit schools in Hanover each year.
This year’s ball ‘An Evening in Old Havana’ — a flashback to 1998’s theme — featured cocktails, dinner, dancing, a raffle drawing, and bidding for a wonderful cause.
