Justice minister calls on JPs to assist in the fight against crime and violence
MANCHESTER, Jamaica- Minister of Justice, Delroy Chuck, has called on justices of the peace (JPs) in Clarendon to assist the nation in the fight against crime and violence.
“Jamaica needs your attention, every wrongdoing that you see, expose it, condemn it. Whether it’s crime, corruption, malpractice, traffic offences, misbehaviour or garbage thrown about the place… condemn all wrongdoings and expose those who are engaged in it,” Chuck urged.
He was speaking to JPs from Clarendon who attended a sensitisation session under the theme ‘Providing Justice… Transforming Lives’, at The Verandah, at Clarendon Park, on February 26.
Chuck said it is important that Jamaica move in the right direction, noting that crime and violence was hurting the country.
He appealed to the JPs who see the young people who do not want to work to encourage and mentor them into the job market, adding that they can start with a small pay, or they can take advantage of the courses in various skill areas offered free of cost by HEART/NSTA Trust.
Chuck also reminded JPs about the importance of making a will for themselves, because the process was simple and in the long run, it reduces the burden on the Administrator General’s Department, while being of benefit to their loved ones in the event of their untimely death.
Meanwhile, Custos of Clarendon, Edith Chin, reminded the JPs that the objectives of the day’s workshop were to help refine their skills and enhance the services they provide.
“As guardians of justice, our responsibilities are essential in ensuring fairness and preserving the integrity of our parish. Today, we are concentrating on enhancing our knowledge and boosting our comprehension of existing protocols. This session will provide the essential opportunity and exchange of ideas in mutual learning,” Chin said.
She told the JPs that they were privileged to have presentations that would expand their understanding of current and topical issues. These included the National Land Agency, which shared information on land ownership and titles.
There were also presentations from the Administrator General’s Department. Attorney-at-law, Julia Moncrieffe-Wiggan, conducted a live demonstration using one of the JPs to show how they should complete their annual reports electronically. The process took less than 10 minutes.
