THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM
Prince Roy breaks maiden tag in fine style
Prince Roy’s third start proved to be the charm as the three-year-old bay colt delivered a commanding performance to win a Non-Restricted Maiden Condition Race for native-bred three-year-olds on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
Bred by Here Comes Ben out of the Legal Process mare Princess Sine, Prince Roy dominated the 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m) event, crossing the finish line 8 ½ lengths ahead of the field in a respectable time of 1:22.0 (24.3 x 48.4 x 1:15.0).
Breeder, owner, and trainer Fitzroy Glispie was thrilled with Prince Roy’s breakthrough victory.
“I’m very pleased with his performance. I was expecting this because he has been improving steadily, and his training leading up to the race was excellent. It was a very good performance,” Glispie told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
Glispie also said that Prince Roy has the potential to excel over longer distances and he could be a factor in the big races down the line.
“I expect him to get a distance of ground due to his breeding by Princess Shine. Let’s not predict anything as yet, but let us take it one step at a time and see,” he said.
Apprentice jockey Richard Henry guided Prince Roy to the lead at the break with Cosalivin (Tevin Foster),
Perfect Affair (Reyan Lewis), and Slam Sharpe (Ian Spence) in pursuit, Prince Roy led the field down the backstretch. Approaching the half-mile (800m) mark, Henry urged Prince Roy to quicken the pace, and the response was immediate.
Prince Roy began to pull away from the field, turning for home with a comfortable lead. From there it was a matter of cruising to the finish as Prince Roy powered home to a convincing victory. Cosalivin and Perfect Affair filled the minor placings, finishing second and third, respectively.
