Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) General Manager Roy Simpson says the appointment of former England Under-20 Manager Paul Simpson as assistant coach of the Reggae Boyz is a significant boost for the country’s football programmes.

The English-born Paul Simpson brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously led England to the Under-17 FIFA World Cup title in 2017.

Roy Simpson says his vast knowledge of the game, both as a player and a coach, makes him a valuable asset to programme as the country builds towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.

“I think it is a good appointment based on his experience and his involvement with professional football,” Roy Simpson said. “The fact that he has worked at this level with senior players and also played the game himself means he brings a deep understanding of what is required. His experience will be instrumental in helping us achieve our goals.”

He noted that Paul Simpson is known for his meticulous approach and organisational skills, qualities that will enhance the professionalism and structure within the team.

“He is very organised and meticulous in terms of what he wants to accomplish with the players and staff,” Roy Simpson added. “Even in the few discussions we have had so far, it is clear that he understands the demands of this level and has been exposed to high-level football. We all stand to learn from his experience.”

Dennis Chung, general secretary of the JFF, also emphasised Paul Simpson’s success at the youth level and how it will benefit the team, particularly the younger players in the squad.

“The fact that he has been successful at the highest level of youth football is significant, especially since we have a number of young players in our ranks,” Chung noted. “His expertise will help in their development and as he settles into his role and takes on more responsibilities, we will continue to utilise his experience and accomplishments at the youth level.”

Chung stressed that the JFF is committed to assembling a team of top professionals to ensure the national team reaches its full potential.

“As you can see, we are putting the right people in place,” he pointed out. “As our President [Michael Ricketts] always says, one of our key objectives is to ensure that the right people are in the right roles to get the job done. We are confident that he will play an integral part in our success.”

The other members of the Steve McClaren-led Reggae Boyz coaching staff are Trevor Sinclair, Merron Gordon, and Richard Hartis.

The Reggae Boyz are set to face St Vincent and the Grenadines in Concacaf Gold Cup qualifiers. The first leg will take place away at Arnos Vale Stadium on March 21, with the second leg set for March 25 at Sabina Park.
