Caricom election observers say Curaçao polls reflected ‘will of the people’
GEORGETOWN. Guyana (CMC) – An election observation team from the Caribbean Community (Caricom) has submitted its preliminary assessment of the general election held recently on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao.
Earlier this year, the president of Curaçao’s Supreme Election Council, Dr Richeline C Joe, invited Caricom to send a technical team to observe the general elections.
In response, the Secretary-General of Caricom agreed to deploy a Caricom Election Observation Mission (CEOM), comprised of three persons.
In a statement on Saturday, the Caricom team said the March 21 election “was conducted smoothly and without major incident, and that the result thereof reflects the will of the people of Curaçao.”
According to the team, the opening procedures, voting processes and closing and counting procedures observed were within the bounds of the published Rules and Procedures for parliamentary elections in Curaçao.
“We also report that there were no major areas of concern.’
On Election Day, the ruling party MFK (Movementu Futuro Kòrsou) secured a landslide victory in Curaçao’s elections, winning 55% of the votes.
This marked the first time in the country’s history that a single party has won an absolute majority, allowing it to govern alone.
Meanwhile, the Caricom team says it will prepare a full report for submission to the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), which will include recommendations for the conduct of future elections in Curaçao.
