KINGSTON, Jamaica — Julius Itubo of Kingston College smashed the boys’ Class Three 1500m record on Wednesday’s second day of the 115th ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium, running an astounding 4:05.15.

The young Kenyan ran away from the field, shaving more than seven seconds off the previous record of 4:12.50 set in 2019 by Bellefield High’s Trevaughn Martin.

He had run a smart 4:14.24 in the preliminaries on Tuesday, a time that would have still won by a large margin on Wednesday as silver medallist Jevaughn Tomlin of Bellefield High ran 4:18.30 and Dejaun Gray of St Elizabeth Technical took the bronze in 4:23.68.

Kingston College’s Brian Kiprop retained his Class One 1500m title with a brilliant well-timed run, winning in 3:55.24, beating Edwin Allen’s Joel Morgan who ran 3:56.12 and Raheem Palmer of Alphansus Davis High who was third with 3:58.42.

The race was supposed to feature a clash between Kiprop and St Jago’s Ryan Achau who was fourth after he started the race at a hectic pace and failed to finish in the medals.

William Knibb Memorial’s Thywaine Sterling was impressive in winning the Class Two gold medal, running away from the field in the last 200 metres to win in 4:06.24.

Luke Plummer of Sydney Pagon High was second with 4:12.94 while Moses Johnson of Edwin Allen was third with 4:12.97.
