Portmore can secure play-off spot in Jamaica Premier League
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Portmore United could secure their place in the play-offs in the Jamaica Premier League Wednesday if they can beat defending champions Cavalier SC in their rescheduled game set to be played at Stadium East starting at 3:30 pm.
Three teams have already secured their spots in the play-offs with another five teams, including Portmore United and Cavalier SC, going head-to-head for the other three spots.
There is another rescheduled game set for Thursday, dark horses Racing United playing away to leaders Mt Pleasant FA in a game that will be crucial to their hopes of making it to the play-offs.
There is another close race at the other end of the point tables with six teams trying to avoid the drop — Dunbeholden FC, Molynes United, Harbour View FC, Chapelton Maroons, Humble Lion and Vere United are all eliminated from play-off contention, separated by 10 points and will be seeking to retain their places for next season.
Wednesday’s game was postponed due to Cavalier SC’s participation in the Concacaf Champions League. Both Portmore United and Cavalier SC are coming off wins last weekend with Portmore United on 60 points from 34 games, in fourth place and Cavalier SC, in fifth place on 53 points from two games less.
A win for Portmore United would see them joining Mt Pleasant FA — 75 points, Montego Bay United — 69 points and Arnett Gardens — 67 points but Cavalier SC will be seeking to extend their unbeaten run against the St Catherine-based team.
Cavalier won the first game 2-1 then drew the second 1-1.
Portmore United are, however, on momentum as they are coming off back-to-back wins, both 1-0 margins against Molynes United and Humble Lion.
