Gunzell wins men’s discus at Crimson Tide Invitational
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Former Edwin Allen High thrower Trevor Gunzell set a new personal best 62.66m to win the men’s discus throw on the opening day of the Crimson Tide Invitational at the University of Alabama on Friday.
Gunzell surpassed his previous best 59.25m set in March and is now ranked number six in the NCAA. It was also the fourth best discus throw in University of Alabama history.
Gunzell led a 1-2-3 finish for Alabama with former Edwin Allen high teammate Christopher Young taking second place with a personal best 58.51m. Another Jamaican, Ricardo Hayles of Barton County was fifth with 56.07m.
Kimola Hines of the University of Louisiana was third in the women’s hammer and fourth in the women’s discus throw at the Crimson Tide meet. Hines threw 53.40m in the hammer and 50.06m in the discus throw.
At the 44 Farms Team Invitational at Texas A&M, former Jamaica College ISSA Champs gold medalist Racquil Broderick of the University of Southern California (USC) broke his own meet record after he threw 62.44m to win the men’s discus throw.
Broderick broke the previous meet record 61.90m he set last year. In March this year he set the new USC programme record 63.09m.
At the Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) Strawberry Relays, Donroy Brown won the men’s shot put with 16.98m with his teammate Josh-Ty Brown placing third with 15.98m.
On the track at the South Florida Invitational in Tampa, former Excelsior High runner Devontie Archer of USF won the men’s 400m hurdles event in 50.65 seconds while Shevioe Reid won the men’s 200m in a wind aided 20.30 seconds (3.2m/s). Alexavier Monfries was third with 20.60 seconds (3.2m/s).
Former Cornwall College athlete KeSean Rhooms was ninth in the men’s high jump with 1.95m and 10th in the men’s triple jump with a wind-aided 13.23m (2.2m/s).
At the Duke Invitational in North Carolina, Clemson University’s Oneka Wilson ran 13.41 seconds (0.2m/s) to qualify for the 100m hurdles final set for Saturday’s second day.
Aliesha Shaw of Kent State was second in the women’s shot put with 14.47m and third in the discus throw with 49.81m, both season’s best marks.
Shakiel Dacres of East Carolina was third in the men’s discus throw with 53.10m.
