KINGSTON, Jamaica–Minister of Labour and Social Security Pearnel Charles Jr has lauded senior citizens for what, he said, are their invaluable contributions of senior citizens in shaping Jamaica’s communities through agriculture, mentorship, and wisdom.

“As a government, we remain committed to ensuring that our senior citizens live with dignity, security, and purpose. We continue to invest in community initiatives, wellness programmes and income-generating opportunities for older persons. Let us build a Jamaica where age is not a barrier but a badge of honour,” he said.

Charles Jr was speaking at the National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC) farmers market event on April 16, celebrating the resilience, tradition, and community spirit of Jamaica’s senior citizens.

The minister also encouraged Jamaicans to consistently support senior farmers by buying local, eating fresh, growing smart, eating smart, and respecting the hands that feed us.

He said the ministry remains committed to honouring and supporting our seniors, showing our appreciation for their dedication, hard work, and sacrifices, and working together to create a society that values, respects, and supports our seniors in their golden years.

The Farmers Market promotes healthy living, food security, and economic independence for seniors while strengthening intergenerational connections, allowing younger Jamaicans to learn from and appreciate the legacy of farming and self-sufficiency. The event aligns with the government’s goals under the Social Protection Strategy and Vision 2030.
