Water quality issues force continued beachfront restrictions at Harmony Beach Park
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Access to the beachfront and swimming areas at the Harmony Beach Park in Montego Bay, St James will continue to be restricted through the Easter holidays following the identification of irregularities in the water, according to the Urban Development Commission (UDC).
“We are aware that this restriction comes as the Easter holiday approaches, a time when many Jamaicans and visitors alike look forward to enjoying our country’s beautiful coastal amenities. We assure the public that the decision to restrict beach access was made out of an abundance of caution, and with a firm commitment to public health, safety and environmental stewardship,” it said in a statement on Thursday.
The UDC also said in collaboration with the relevant agencies, it has been undertaking detailed assessments to address the ongoing beachfront water quality issues, and recommended the Walter Fletcher Beach, located nearby, as a suitable alternative for beachgoers over the Easter weekend.
The restriction was first announced in early April

It will not affect the park’s other amenities.
“While swimming is temporarily unavailable, visitors are encouraged to continue enjoying the many other amenities at Harmony Beach Park, including green spaces, walking trails, play areas, and recreational facilities, all of which remain open and welcoming to the public,” the commission added.
The UDC said it remains committed to restoring full access to the beach park waterfront and will continue to provide timely updates as work progresses.
